My Husband Saved My Cousin Instead of Me Chapter 14

My Husband Saved My Cousin Instead of Me Chapter 14

I couldn’t be bothered to engage. A few days later, I caught a mild cold and went to Westbrook Medical

Center to get it checked out. That’s where I ran into them. Cecilia and my parents were there for some acne

scar treatment.

The second my dad spotted me, he charged. “You ungrateful brat! What did you say to Gavin? He backed out!

He stopped pouring resources into Cecilia!”

I looked at him and walked right past, ice cold. The old man flapped around like a plucked turkey. “Sage

Reed, what the hell kind of attitude is that? I’m your father!”

My expression didn’t flicker. I looked at him like he was a complete stranger. “Sorry, old man, I didn’t

recognize you, Uncle Duncan.” He was so furious his face went beet red.

My mom pulled me aside. “Sweetie, are you still angry? We were only thinking of Cecilia. We’re family. You

don’t stay mad at family. You can still call us Mom and Dad when we’re alone.”

I gave her a tight, cutting smile. “So he gets called Uncle and you don’t? What, feeling left out? Excuse me,

Aunt Miriam, you’re in my way.”

She looked gutted. There was a time when I fought Cecilia for everything. When they left for overseas, I sent message after message saying I was sick. No one ever answered.

They’d never seen me this cold before. I shoved a stack of love letters and a diary into Miriam’s hands. “Here,

Aunt Miriam. Uncle Duncan wrote these to your sister.”

The summer before senior year, they sold our house and took Cecilia abroad. Before I was kicked out, I

stumbled on my dad’s secret. It was painfully cliché.

When he was young, he fell for Cecilia’s birth mother first. Too bad my aunt Cordelia was a lovesick

romantic hung up on some reckless, free-spirited painter. He got her pregnant and refused to commit.

My father offered to play the fool-said he’d raise the baby as his own. Aunt Cordelia said no. After the

painter drowned, she couldn’t live without him. She was gone within a year. And my father? He never let go of

the woman he couldn’t have.

So he married my mother and had me. A man is cruel to a woman he doesn’t love. And the child she gives him? He hates her just the same.

My father poured all his love into Cecilia. Everything else-the resentment, the coldness, the rage-he saved

that for me.

My mom hands were shaking. She walked up to my dad and demanded, “All these years, did you ever love

me? Even a little?”

Dad stayed silent. The answer was written all over his face. She completely broke down. I stood on the sidelines, genuinely enjoying the train wreck.

Unbelievable. Two sisters, both hopeless romantics. Lucky for me, I woke up early. I learned men couldn’t be trusted, so I grabbed money with one hand and guarded my heart with the other.

At least I didn’t end up with nothing.
