My Husband Died in a Crash, Only to Resurrect at My Funeral to Steal My Legacy Chapter 05

My phone screen lit up.

At the same moment, the massive display behind me flickered to life.

The second the footage appeared, the entire room fell silent.

Just hours ago, Caleb Vance and Kaylee Miller had supposedly been killed after being struck by a semi-truck outside the auditorium.

Now they were very much alive.

And very much naked.

The video showed them tangled together in a hotel bed, completely lost in each other.

Caleb clasped Kaylee’s hand, smug satisfaction radiating from every word he spoke.

“My mom just texted me. She didn’t manage to catch Clara’s parents, but she cornered Clara at the hospital.”

Unlike Caleb, Kaylee looked uneasy.

“Caleb, I don’t know. Something about Clara feels off.”

She frowned thoughtfully.

“Think about it. Normally, if she found out something happened to you, she’d never leave your side. But today? She got in her car and drove away. Just like that.”

A flicker of anxiety crossed her face.

“What if she figured something out?”

“You’re overthinking it.”

Caleb let out a contented sigh and pulled her into his arms.

“Clara’s an idiot. She probably saw me get hit and completely freaked out.”

Kaylee still didn’t look convinced.

“Fine. Let’s say she panicked. Then what about her suddenly sending her parents overseas?”

Caleb kissed her forehead.

“Come on. She’s been talking about doing that for years. She always said her parents worked hard helping us raise Mia and wanted to treat them to a vacation someday. The timing is just a coincidence.”

Under Caleb’s repeated reassurance, Kaylee finally relaxed against his chest.

“I hope you’re right. We’ve already gone this far. There’s no turning back now.”

She hesitated.

“How long are we supposed to stay hidden?”

“Not much longer.”

Excitement suddenly entered Caleb’s voice.

“With Clara’s personality? The online hate campaign will destroy her sooner or later.”

His expression became almost manic.

“And don’t forget my mom. She’ll do everything she can to help us. Give it five years. Clara will be completely ruined.”

“Five years?”

Kaylee sighed.

“That’s a long time.”

Caleb immediately sensed her disappointment and tightened his arm around her.

“It’s really not.”

He lowered his voice.

“Do you even know how much Clara’s company is worth now?”

Kaylee blinked.

“How much?”

Caleb gritted his teeth.

“Almost a billion dollars.”

Kaylee shot upright so fast she nearly fell off the bed.

“A billion dollars?!”

Caleb nodded.

“Yeah.”

He looked increasingly bitter as he spoke.

“And that’s only its current valuation. She’s spent the last decade building that company. The future value will be much higher.”

Then he continued.

“Besides the company, she owns a huge parcel of land north of Silverport. She’s building a golf resort there right now. Once it’s finished, it’ll generate two or three hundred million dollars a year without breaking a sweat.”

He paused.

“She also owns three estates and two office towers in Silverport.”

As he spoke, something complicated flashed across his face.

For the first time, he looked away from Kaylee.

Staring out the window, he murmured quietly to himself.

“Honestly… Clara’s a rare woman. And Mia turned out great because of her.”

Kaylee’s expression instantly darkened.

“Caleb, what is that supposed to mean?”

Her voice sharpened.

“Are you regretting this?”

“Do you still have feelings for that old woman?”

She jabbed a finger into his chest.

“Don’t forget who saved your life when you were eighteen! You started that fire in the school storage building because you were sneaking cigarettes. I was the one who ran into the flames and dragged you out!”

The moment those words left her mouth, the strange look in Caleb’s eyes vanished completely.

He immediately turned and wrapped her in his arms.

His gaze overflowed with gratitude and tenderness.

“How could I forget?”

He kissed her forehead.

“Kaylee Miller, you’re the only woman I’ll ever love. You saved my life.”

Kaylee laughed happily and snuggled closer to him.

Meanwhile, I stood frozen.

The mystery that had haunted me across two lifetimes finally made sense.

So this was why Caleb had betrayed me.

Why he had schemed against me.

Why he had spent years plotting my destruction.

It all traced back to what happened thirteen years ago.

Except there was one problem.

The person who dragged him out of that burning storage building wasn’t Kaylee.

It was me.
