My Husband Died in a Crash, Only to Resurrect at My Funeral to Steal My Legacy Chapter 03

After leaving the scene of the “accident,” I drove straight to the company.

The moment I arrived, I called an emergency board meeting.

Once everyone was seated, I got straight to the point.

“There’s only one item on today’s agenda.”

I looked around the conference room.

“We’re voting to remove Caleb Vance as Chairman of the Board.”

The room fell silent.

Not a single person spoke.

I had built this company from nothing, but Caleb had always held the title of chairman.

Over the years, several of the senior executives who had helped me build the company warned me again and again that even in marriage, I should never surrender control.

People changed.

Power changed people.

You could never fully predict someone’s heart.

I had always laughed it off.

Because back then, I loved Caleb.

Deeply.

So deeply that I trusted him with everything.

Now that I had suddenly made this decision, many of the longtime executives looked openly pleased.

But Caleb’s loyal supporters immediately exploded.

“What gives you the right?”

“We don’t agree!”

“If Caleb’s stepping down, then he should be here himself!”

“He can’t make it,” I replied calmly.

I turned on the television mounted on the conference room wall.

Instantly, a live news broadcast appeared on screen.

Caleb’s parents were crying hysterically in front of a crowd of reporters, wailing about their son’s tragic death.

Gasps echoed through the room.

Several shareholders stared at the screen in disbelief.

I folded my hands on the table.

“Do I have your approval now?”

Three minutes later, I walked back into my office carrying a stack of signed appointment documents.

The chairman position was officially mine.

I picked up my phone and dialed a number I knew by heart.

“Send two security teams immediately.”

“One team goes to the hospital and stays with Mia.”

“The second team takes my parents overseas for a vacation. Today.”

There was a brief pause.

“And one more thing.”

I forwarded Caleb’s phone number.

“Track whoever is using this number.”

The man on the other end answered with a low, steady acknowledgment.

Only then did I finally allow myself to relax.

I sank into my chair and stared out through the floor-to-ceiling windows at the city below.

Traffic flowed endlessly through the streets.

For the first time all day, I exhaled.

Caleb…

If you were really dead…

That might actually be for the best.

After making all the necessary arrangements, I hurried back to the hospital.

An hour later, Mia was finally wheeled out of surgery.

She had only just woken from anesthesia when she reached for my hand.

“Mommy…”

Her small fingers wrapped tightly around mine.

“Why are you here by yourself? Where’s Daddy?”

My chest tightened.

She continued in a tiny voice.

“Yesterday Daddy promised that while I was in surgery, he’d stay outside and protect Mommy for me.”

“So why didn’t he come?”

Tears instantly filled her eyes.

My own vision blurred.

Images from my previous life flashed through my mind like a nightmare.

Mia lying lifeless in a hospital bed.

The unbearable grief.

The crushing regret.

I squeezed her hand tighter and forced down the pain threatening to swallow me.

“Mommy doesn’t need anyone to protect her.”

I smiled softly.

“Remember what you always call me?”

“My strong, powerful mommy.”

“I can protect myself.”

“And I can protect you too.”

I gently brushed her hair back.

“Besides, I bought you an Elsa doll.”

“It’s waiting for you in your room.”

“So no more tears, okay?”

Her eyes immediately brightened.

“Really?”

“Really.”

She nodded obediently.

“Okay!”

Children were wonderfully simple.

Just seeing her smile again made me feel like I could finally breathe.

Mia.

Don’t worry.

This time, I would protect you.

I would protect our family.

Forever.

After settling Mia into her hospital room and making sure she was comfortable, I headed downstairs to grab some food.

But the moment I stepped into the hospital lobby, a swarm of reporters rushed toward me.
