My Husband Backed His Assistant-Until He Learned She Had Killed His Mother Chapter 14

Margaret’s condition hadn’t become severe overnight.

Three years ago, she started forgetting to turn off the stove and nearly set the house on fire.

She would get lost in the neighborhood where she’d lived for decades.

She would mistake raw meat in the refrigerator for food that was ready to eat.

Sometimes, she would even suddenly lose control of her bladder.

She could stand inside her own home and fail to recognize anyone around her.

The day she was diagnosed, Ethan sat in the hospital hallway with his head in his hands.

He stayed silent for a long time before finally looking at me.

“Olivia, the company is at a critical stage right now. I really can’t step away from work.”

Emily stood nearby with a newly purchased limited-edition bag hanging from her shoulder.

She said bluntly, “I really can’t deal with messes and dirty things. Mom is your responsibility from

now on.”

And just like that, I became the one responsible for caring for Margaret.

I told her who I was over and over again, helped her relearn the way home, and fed her one spoonful

at a time.

Caring for her was no different from looking after a child around the clock.

As time passed, she began forgetting her own son and daughter.

But somehow, she always remembered my name.

Later, her condition grew worse.

She would suddenly get out of bed in the middle of the night and wander endlessly through the

house.

She would tear through drawers, smash things, and scream.

She would smear her own waste everywhere.

When she lost control, she would sometimes grab my hair and dig her nails into my arms.

Caring for her meant I could barely let myself truly relax for even a moment.

Over those three years, I ended up with more injuries than I could count.

Thinking about all of it, I slowly looked around the ballroom at Ethan, at Emily, and at all the people who had just called me a useless housewife.

“You all keep asking why I haven’t worked these past few years. It wasn’t because I wasn’t capable, and it wasn’t because I wanted to live off Ethan and enjoy a life of luxury.”

“It was because Margaret’s condition kept getting worse, and she needed someone with her around

the clock.”

“She forgot almost everyone. She often couldn’t even recognize Ethan or Emily.”

“But she always remembered me. She had fewer and fewer lucid moments, and whenever she became confused, all she did was call my name over and over.”

I turned to Ethan.

“All these years, I cooked for her, gave her medication, helped her bathe, and took her to every follow-up appointment. You were always busy with the company and often wouldn’t even spare one full day to stay with her.”

Then I looked at Emily.

“You were busy shopping, traveling, and dating. Every time you showed up, you stayed less than half an hour before saying you had somewhere else to be. Tell me, how long has it been since either of you truly spent time with your own mother?”

The color slowly drained from Ethan’s and Emily’s faces, and both of them began to tremble.

Finally, I looked directly at Emily.

“This morning, you were the one who picked Margaret up!”

Emily’s whole body suddenly shook.

I raised my voice and continued.

“You said you were taking her to the hotel early! You said you’d help her change, do her hair, and make sure she looked good for her birthday party!”

“I thought you’d finally agreed to take care of your own mother for one day, so I let you take her. Because I was desperate for one single day of rest!”

“But after you picked her up, what the hell did you do? Why did Margaret, who was supposed to arrive at the hotel with you, end up alone at the Lakeshore Restaurant? And why did she die there at the hands of your beloved Vanessa?”
