My Husband Backed His Assistant-Until He Learned She Had Killed His Mother Chapter 02

An hour later, I changed my clothes and arrived at the hotel.

The top-floor ballroom had been transformed for an extravagant private birthday party.

The room was filled with flowers, champagne, and beautifully wrapped gifts.

It was obvious that Ethan had put a lot of effort into the party.

Nearly all of the Walker family’s relatives and friends were there, along with the board members of Walker Group and its major business partners.

Ethan was busy greeting the guests.

Every so often, he checked his watch and glanced toward the ballroom entrance.

He was clearly waiting for his mother to arrive.

Vanessa, meanwhile, wore a skintight champagne-colored gown. Her blonde hair had been curled to perfection, and she stood laughing with Ethan’s younger sister, Emily Walker, their arms linked.

When they saw me walk in, they exchanged a look and came over together.

Vanessa smiled first.

“Well, look who finally showed up. Isn’t this the daughter who lets her mother eat at upscale restaurants without paying? Planning to pack up some dessert and champagne tonight and take it back to all your hick relatives?”

Emily rolled her eyes so hard I almost wondered if they’d get stuck.

“Olivia, I’m begging you. Get your family to show a little class. Stop making people think the Walkers support a bunch of poor freeloaders who only show up when they want something.”

The surrounding guests quickly gathered around when they heard the commotion.

One of Ethan’s business partners lowered his voice and said to the person beside him, “I heard when I got here that someone ate at the Lakeshore Restaurant this afternoon and refused to pay. That was Olivia’s mother?”

The other person nodded.

“I heard Vanessa locked her in a dog cage and even had her teeth pulled out.”

The two of them spoke quietly, but another guest nearby made no effort to lower his voice.

“People like that deserve to be thrown out. No status, no manners, and she still had the nerve to cause trouble at a Walker family restaurant.”

“She’s embarrassing the entire Walker family. If no one teaches her a lesson, she’ll probably bring even more relatives next time and expect them all to eat for free.”

Ethan heard the whispers, and his expression darkened.

He walked over and looked at me like I was garbage.

“Olivia, today is my mother’s fiftieth birthday. If your mother’s mess ruins her mood tonight, I’ll never forgive you!”

He even shoved me aside. “So keep your mouth shut!”

I almost laughed.

“Ethan, if you really care about your mother that much, you should be at the restaurant right now!”

Ethan’s face twisted.

“To see what? A crazy woman making a scene? Or should I go watch her humiliate my staff and my customers?!”

Emily folded her arms across her chest and raised her voice so everyone around us could hear.

“Oh my God, just imagining it is horrifying! You expect Ethan to drive across the entire city for some crazy woman? Are you insane?”

Vanessa looked at me smugly.

“All right, all right. I know you’re anxious. Relax. I only had the staff put her to work so she could work off the bill.”

As soon as she finished speaking, the restaurant manager, Daniel, rushed into the ballroom.

His face was deathly pale, as though he had just witnessed something horrifying.

“Vanessa, we have a problem. The woman in the dog cage… she’s dead.”
