My Family Heard My Murderous Thoughts, So the Fake Heiress Called 911 Chapter 05

Hailey spun around, pointing straight at me, looking triumphant. “She’s been threatening me all day! She’s been trying to kill me! Mom and Dad and Nolan can all testify!”

Mom and Dad and Nolan stood in the living room, their faces pale.

Not because they were worried I’d get arrested, but because they were afraid I’d get provoked and make a move right there.

I stood there, one hand in my pocket.

[The police are here? Fine.]

The older officer stepped into the living room, looked around, and finally turned his attention to me.

“ID.”

I took a hand out of my pocket and handed over my ID.

Officer Evan Brooks took it and checked it on his department-issued tablet. The screen scrolled for a few seconds. He looked up at me, then shook his head at Sergeant Daniel Reeves.

“No criminal record. Not a wanted fugitive.”

Hailey’s expression changed.

“That’s impossible!” She stepped forward quickly. “Run it again! There has to be something on her!”

Sergeant Reeves turned to Gregory. “What’s going on here?”

Gregory opened his mouth, but nothing came out.

What was he supposed to say? That they could hear me thinking about how to kill people?

“It’s a misunderstanding,” Nolan said calmly.

“No, it’s not!” Hailey shrieked. “She wants to kill me!”

“You told me yourself in the study, Nolan! You said she was dangerous and told me to stay away from her!”

Nolan looked at her coldly. “I told you to stay away from her because you keep trying to frame her. I was afraid you’d push your luck until you got yourself killed.”

Hailey froze.

She hadn’t expected Nolan to say that in front of the police.

She opened her mouth but couldn’t say anything. Her expression hardened.

If playing nice didn’t work, she’d use force.

She stepped closer to me, tears still on her face, and lowered her voice until only the two of us could hear.

“So what if you don’t have a criminal record?”

She stared at me, her eyes full of malice.

“The police came today. From now on, everyone’s going to know the police questioned you as a suspect.

You’ll never shake that label.”

Then Hailey suddenly stepped back, raising her voice as her expression instantly turned terrified.

“Sloane, what are you doing? You’re threatening me right in front of the police?”

[The act was painfully obvious. Only an idiot would buy it.]

Mom and Dad and Nolan all stiffened.

“Ms. Bennett.” Sergeant Reeves wasn’t stupid. He could see through the act. He turned to me. “Do you have

anything to say?”

I slowly slipped a hand into my pocket.

Nolan immediately sprang away from the wall and moved in front of Mom and Dad.

His hands were open in a defensive posture. He thought I was reaching for a knife.

Seeing Nolan’s reaction, Sergeant Reeves put a hand on his duty belt too.

I gave Nolan a puzzled look, then pulled out a black leather credential wallet.

I tossed it to Sergeant Reeves.

He caught it instinctively and flipped it open.

The moment he saw what was inside, Sergeant Reeves snapped to attention.

The scrutiny and impatience he’d shown when he arrived vanished, replaced by unmistakable respect and a

trace of nervousness.

Hailey hadn’t noticed any of it.

She was still standing in front of me with her back to Sergeant Reeves, unable to see his expression.

All she’d seen was me throw something at him.

Hailey deliberately shouted, “You just attacked a police officer? Sergeant, arrest her!”

Sergeant Reeves ignored her He closed the credential wallet, gave me a respectful nod, and handed it back

with both hands.

“My apologies. I didn’t realize who you were.”

He didn’t address me by my title.

Under protocol, my operational identity was restricted.

I took the credential wallet, put it back in my pocket, and didn’t say a word.
