My Family Heard My Murderous Thoughts, So the Fake Heiress Called 911 Chapter 01

Mom and Dad yanked Hailey behind them. “Hailey, stop! Don’t say another word!”

Hailey stumbled from the sudden pull and froze.

Mom and Dad had probably never yelled at her like that before. Her eyes immediately filled with tears, and she looked at Catherine Whitmore, hurt written all over her face.

“Mom… I…”

Catherine didn’t look at her. She kept her eyes on me, a trace of wariness in them.

I tilted my head, puzzled. I couldn’t figure out where that wariness was coming from.

Hailey clearly wasn’t willing to let it go. Her voice softened.

“Mom, Dad, I’m not blaming Sloane. I just lost my balance…”

Catherine barely managed a response. “Okay. Go rest in your room.”

Hailey froze again. She bit her lip and walked away reluctantly, but she didn’t actually go back to her room.

Instead, she stopped at the top of the stairs and secretly watched us.

Gregory Whitmore shot Nolan a look.

Nolan gave a slight nod, pulled out his phone, and started scrolling.

Gregory lowered his voice. “Get her settled in her room.”

Catherine snapped out of it and forced a strained smile. “Your… your room’s on the second floor. Want me to show you?”

I didn’t answer. Once I slip into profiler mode, I don’t talk much, so I just followed her upstairs.

She’d deliberately picked the room closest to the bedroom she shared with Gregory.

She opened the door to a large, beautifully furnished room that had clearly been prepared in advance.

Catherine stayed at the threshold, not daring to come in. “This room’s close to ours. If you need anything tonight… you can call us.”

I scanned the room and assessed it silently.

[Three camera blind spots. The window opens onto the lawn. I could climb out without being easily noticed. The closet’s big enough to hide someone.]

[And they put me this close to them. Aren’t they worried I might slip into their rooms one by one in the middle of the night?]

Catherine’s face went white.

I looked at her and was about to ask what was wrong when footsteps sounded at the top of the stairs.

Hailey was back.

She was carrying a plate of sliced fruit, wearing a sweet, obedient smile. “Sloane, I brought you some fruit. I’ve got so much I want to talk to you about…”

Before she could finish, Catherine stepped directly in front of her.

“No!”

“Sloane’s tired. She needs rest. Go back to your room.”

Hailey’s smile froze.

She looked at Catherine, then at me, disbelief written all over her face.

Was this really the same mom who had always given her whatever she wanted?

Catherine had never once told her no in all these years.

She’d already been yelled at twice today. Were blood ties really that powerful?

Hailey bit her lip and forced another smile. “Mom, I just wanted to bond with Sloane…”

“There’s no need for that.” Catherine’s tone left no room for argument. “Not now.”

Hailey stood there clutching the fruit plate, practically speaking through clenched teeth. “Then… get some rest, Sloane.”

She turned and left, visibly flustered.

I watched her disappear around the corner.

Truth was, I hadn’t planned to do anything today. I’d spent most of the day in the car and was tired.

Catherine gave me another fake smile. “I’ll go. Call if you need anything.”

I gave a small nod, closed the door, and settled back on the bed with my eyes closed.

Footsteps kept passing through the hallway at regular intervals, about every fifteen minutes.

[Making rounds? Worried I’ll go after someone?]

[Too predictable, though. Fifteen-minute intervals. Easy to work around. Fifteen minutes is enough time to do a lot.]

The footsteps paused outside my door.

Then they hurried away.
