The loud crash instantly startled everyone in the house.

Mom, Dad, and Grant rushed out.

Aubrey stumbled weakly into Grant’s arms, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe.

“I-I was just trying to get Hannah to come out and have some cake…”

“I told her the fake wedding was my idea.”

“But she just smashed the cake in my face…”

“She also… she called us a pair of shameless cheaters.”

“She said Mom and Dad were biased.”

“She said you guys are lousy parents…”

Grant tightened his arms around her, his brows drawing together.

I rushed over and stood right in front of him, screaming with everything I had.

“I didn’t do any of that!”

“She’s faking it!”

But Grant couldn’t see me.

Aubrey only cried harder, sounding more and more pitiful.

“Hannah’s just upset.”

“Please don’t blame her…”

“It’s all my fault.”

“I shouldn’t have knocked on her door…”

My voice drifted uselessly through the air.

No one could hear me.

Mom took a step back, her eyes filled with disgust, as if I were something filthy.

Dad’s face flushed red with anger.

“Hannah, are you done yet?!”

“And to think we even brought you gifts!”

“Look what you’ve done to Aubrey!”

Grant looked down at the disheveled Aubrey in his arms.

There was nothing but deep disappointment and anger in his eyes.

He raised the diamond engagement ring he’d planned to propose to me with and hurled it out the window.

“Hannah, you’re impossible!”

“I’m done!”

“I’ve spoiled you rotten all these years.”

“You’ve become selfish and so extreme about everything.”

“I was completely wrong about you.”

My ghostly body froze in midair.

All I could do was silently endure their misunderstanding and disgust.

In the middle of the chaos, Mom suddenly frowned and sniffed the air.

“Thomas, what is that smell?”

“It stinks.”

“Do you smell it?”

The climate in our town occasionally gets stiflingly hot and humid out of nowhere, and right now is one of those times.

My body had been lying on the bed, completely buried beneath thick blankets.

By now, it had already begun to decompose.

The moment Aubrey heard Mom, she immediately covered her forehead.

“Mom…”

“My head hurts…”

Mom wrapped an arm around her protectively.

“Baby, sit down.”

“Let me clean that wound up.”

Dad, Thomas, crouched beside her.

His voice was cautious but full of hope.

“Sweetheart…”

“That System mission you told us about…”

“Did you complete it?”

“Are you completely okay now?”

Aubrey leaned against Grant with a peaceful, happy smile and nodded.

Dad froze for a second.

Then he broke into a grin and slapped his thigh.

“That’s good!”

“We’re having a real celebration tonight!”

“First, we’re celebrating Aubrey completing the System mission and coming back to life.”

“And second, we’re celebrating Grant’s proposal!”

Grant let out a breath of relief and hurried over to the window to look for the ring.

He searched through the bushes below for a long time.

By the time he came back, his forehead was covered in sweat.

Then he immediately started making calls.

“Hey, can the band make it tonight?”

“Yeah. Tonight.”

“And the lighting setup we talked about before…”

“Yeah, that one.”

“Right. Bring everyone over.”

Mom directed people as they moved the tables around.

Dad started hanging streamers.

I floated above them and watched as the living room quickly filled with balloons.

They hooked up the sound system.

Candles were arranged in the shape of a heart.

Grant called a few of my friends too.

They came in laughing and chatting, saying how lucky I was and how romantic the whole setup Grant had prepared for me was.

I perched on the chandelier and watched them finish setting everything up.

Everyone was smiling.

Everyone was waiting for the “me” behind the door to finally open it.

Once everything was ready, Grant straightened his tie and cleared his throat.

“Hannah, come on.”

“Open the door, okay?”

“I’m sorry.”

“I lost my temper earlier.”

“I went too far.”

“Just open the door.”

“Let’s talk this out face-to-face, okay?”

The smell kept getting stronger.

Little by little, it drifted out into the living room.

“Hannah?”

Grant knocked again.

“I’ll count to three.”

“If you don’t open up, I’m coming in.”
