My Don Forgot Who Gave Him Everything Chapter 08

My Don Forgot Who Gave Him Everything Chapter 08

Among the people Lila had conned, Matteo was neither the

first nor the last.

He was simply the one who lost the most.

The system Rinaldi Data had developed was removed from one major platform after another, and the losses were impossible

to calculate.

The newly hired staff could not negotiate access to any other platforms, so the company could only keep limping along like

that.

Shareholders pulled out one after another, and several Rinaldi

Family elders began questioning Matteo’s ability.

In the end, Rinaldi Data declared bankruptcy.

As for Matteo himself, no one knew where he had gone.

Later, I heard from Julian that Matteo had returned to the old

neighborhood where we grew up.

With the last two hundred thousand dollars he had, he bought

a plot at a cemetery.

He put up a memorial marker for our child.

No.

Our child had never been born, so it could not really be called a

grave marker.

I heard he went to the cemetery every day to visit the baby.

He insisted the baby had been a girl.

The inscription on the marker listed the baby as a daughter

too.

I heard his parents tried to set him up with countless women.

But once those women heard that his previous marriage had fallen apart because he had cheated, none of those setups went anywhere.

I heard Matteo became even quieter than before and often went a long time without saying a single word.

I heard his parents moved out of the old neighborhood for his

sake.

I heard…

Later, news of Matteo gradually faded away.

In the third year after my divorce, I agreed to give Julian a

chance.

A year later, Julian and I got married.

The wedding was grand.

Even though it was my second marriage, Julian did not care at

all.

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

I sat in front of the vanity mirror, playing with his ear between my fingers.

“This is my second marriage, and you’re making it this big. Aren’t you afraid people will laugh?”

Julian leaned against me, his forehead rubbing lightly against

my lower abdomen as he spoke.

“It may be your second marriage, but it’s my first.”

“So we’re doing it like a first wedding.”

“I’d like to see who dares laugh.”

I smiled helplessly.

Before we got together, how had I never known Julian could be this playful and shamelessly clingy?

Before, he had clearly been the successful, mature, and steady

consigliere of the Ferraro Family.

“Why are you such a brat now? You weren’t like this before.”

He sounded perfectly justified.

“Before we were together, I had to keep up appearances.”

“Now that I have you, why would I keep pretending?”

On the day of the wedding, I thought I saw Matteo.

He stood in the farthest corner of the reception hall, so thin he looked almost hollowed out.

He was wearing the suit I had bought him before our divorce.

Back then, it had fit him perfectly.

Now it hung empty on his frame.

He held a bouquet in his hands.

It was made of white roses and champagne tulips.

They looked a lot like the flowers he had given me on the night

he proposed after graduation.

They also looked a lot like the flowers he had given Lila at the

university’s centennial gala.

When I looked over again, the corner was empty.

Maybe I had imagined it.

When the officiant began reading the vows, Julian held my

hand.

His palm was warm.

As I looked at him, I suddenly remembered the person I had been many years ago: the little girl who climbed onto the stage at the community center, the girl who said yes without hesitation under the stars in the planetarium, the girl who

drank one glass after another for Matteo’s company, and the

girl who lost her child in a hospital bed without making a

sound.

Every version of me had once loved someone with her whole

heart.

And every version of me had carried me, just as sincerely, to this day.

Julian lowered his head and kissed the back of my hand.

“Elena.”

“From now on, I’ll walk every road with you.”

I smiled and nodded.

“Okay.”

From that day on, the past eleven years finally truly drifted away from me.

And every day after that had nothing to do with Matteo

Rinaldi.
