My Don Forgot Who Gave Him Everything Chapter 02

My Don Forgot Who Gave Him Everything Chapter 02

I finally lifted my eyes from my phone screen.

“Just drive.”

“I haven’t been back on my feet for long. I’d rather not die in Fifth Avenue traffic with my soon-to-be ex-husband on my first day of being single again.”

Matteo’s hands tightened sharply around the steering wheel.

Of course he knew what I was talking about.

Two months ago, he called and asked me to bring a port bid document to the company. That file would decide whether Rinaldi Data could secure the East River dock payment-system contract.

I drove there myself.

Halfway there, a speeding truck lost control, flipped onto its side, and crushed the front of my car.

I was trapped in the driver’s seat with a shattered left leg.

That day, I called Matteo more than a dozen times.

His phone was off the entire time.

Only later did I find out that Lila had said she had never seen the pigeons in Milan, so he flew her to Italy that very day.

He stayed there with her for an entire week.

The person who stayed with me through surgery, signed the surgical consent paperwork, and handled my rehab appointments was Nora.

As for Matteo, he heard only one sentence from his assistant, “Donna was in a minor car accident,” and assumed I had walked away with a few scratches.

At the thought, a sudden ache tugged low in my abdomen.

I instinctively pressed a hand to my stomach.

Matteo saw the movement in the rearview mirror, and his brows drew together slightly.

Just then, the car’s Bluetooth began to ring.

The ringtone was a syrupy love song.

A name appeared on the screen.

Lila.

Matteo did not avoid me. He answered the call directly.

The girl’s soft, delicate voice filled the entire car at once.

“Matteo, I have classes all day today, and I still have to work my shift at the shop tonight. I’m starving.”

Matteo glanced at me.

I looked out the window without expression.

He gave a quiet laugh, and his voice dropped a little.

“I know, sweetheart. I’ll go buy you your favorite pistachio cannoli and hot chocolate now.”

On the other end of the line, Lila cooed a few more sweet, clingy lines in that soft voice.

Listening to her, I felt my stomach turn.

After the call ended, I pointed to the intersection ahead before Matteo could speak.

“You can let me out up there.”

The black SUV pulled over by the curb.

I opened the door and got out without looking back at him.

The car soon merged back into traffic.

Only after it disappeared completely did I grab the iron railing by the sidewalk, cold sweat sliding down my temple.

The heavy ache in my lower abdomen became clearer and sharper.

I stood there for a long while before taking a cab to St. Vincent Private Hospital.

The next morning, the doctor looked at my blood test results and spoke gently.

“Congratulations, Mrs. Rinaldi. You are thirteen weeks pregnant.”

I stayed silent for a very long time.

Thirteen weeks.

So when I decided I no longer wanted Matteo, this baby had already been with me for quite some time.

During the first few years of our marriage, Matteo had wanted a child badly.

He said that if we had a daughter, she would definitely take after me. Even if she had a temper, it would not matter. He would spoil her.

We had both been checked before, and neither of us had any health issues, but after all these years, we never had a child.

Now that we were getting divorced, the baby had come after all.

Forget it.

It was the baby’s bad luck to come at a time like this.

I folded the report and placed it in my bag.

“Doctor,” I heard myself say calmly, “please help me schedule the procedure.”

The moment I walked out of the examination room, I saw Matteo and Lila standing at the other end of the hallway.

Lila held a test report in her hand, her face pale. Her first reaction was to hide behind Matteo, as if I would kill her if she moved even a second too slowly.

When Matteo saw me, surprise flashed across his face first, but his expression quickly turned cold.

“What are you doing here?”

Before I could answer, he continued, “Elena, we can end this cleanly. Lila isn’t in good health. If you follow us around like this, you’ll scare her.”

Of course.

He really thought I had followed them here.

I glanced at the way Lila was protecting her stomach and smiled.

“Look carefully. I got here first.”

“And this is the OB-GYN department. Matteo, your little girlfriend isn’t pregnant, is she?”

I tightened my grip on my bag strap.

“Don’t forget, we still haven’t officially received the divorce decree.”

With that, I turned to leave.

Suddenly, someone called my name from behind me.

“Elena.”

I looked back and saw Dr. Rowan Shaw walking toward me in a white coat.

He was my rehab physician, and he was also the only person who had kept track of my condition after the car accident.

Matteo’s gaze instantly grew colder.

“Who is he? How do you know each other?”

Rowan ignored his questions and walked straight up to me, lowering his voice.

“Does your leg still hurt today? Did you have any noticeable swelling after the last rehab session?”

I smiled.

“Thanks to Dr. Shaw, I can basically walk normally now.”

Matteo strode over abruptly and grabbed my shoulders.

“What physical therapy?”

“I thought you only had minor scrapes. Why would you need rehab?”

I looked at him and suddenly found it laughable.

So he really had not known.
