My Dad’s Cheating Had a Price Tag Until It Couldn’t Keep My Mom Here Chapter 05

Mom led me out of that house, step by step.

The security guys tried to block her, but they didn’t expect her to be willing to die right there. They backed off.

We arrived in a small town, the kind of quiet place I had never seen after growing up surrounded by money and noise.

A flicker of something crossed Mom’s face. Nostalgia, maybe.

“Elowen, this is where I grew up.”

It hit me hard.

She’d never told me her story. Not once.

From as far back as I could remember, she’d never mentioned my grandparents.

I’d always assumed they just weren’t close.

That was why she never talked about them.

Then she took me to a cemetery. And I understood.

They’d been gone a long time.

“Elowen, was I an idiot?”

“I threw away my own parents for a man. I failed them.”

The tears spilled over before she could stop them.

Turns out, my grandparents had never approved of Dad.

They didn’t want their only daughter marrying someone like him and throwing her life away.

They wanted her close. Not gone forever.

But Mom had been so consumed with love back then. She wouldn’t listen. She pushed back against everything they said.

She went so far as to cut ties completely, just to be with Dad.

The plan was to let them cool off. She’d come back later and make things right. She’d be a good daughter then.

But no one ever knows what tomorrow will bring.

When the story sank in, my hatred for Dad burned even hotter.

“Mom, none of this was your fault.”

“Please don’t beat yourself up.”

I didn’t know how to comfort her. I just gave her everything I had.

Her breathing evened out, finally.

“Elowen, remember this.”

“A man’s promises aren’t worth a damn thing.”

I nodded. Hard.

Mom hadn’t been back home in way too long. I followed her around while she retraced old memories.

She’d blocked every possible way for Dad to reach her. She was done. Completely done.

But he still found her.

He showed up at our door, face dark.

The second he saw her, he grabbed her hand.

“Come home with me.”

I tensed up, ready to put myself between them.

But Mom pulled me behind her and held me there. Tight.

“Caelian, we are done. I’m filing for divorce.”

She didn’t even look surprised.

She only repeated herself, calmer this time.

“I’m filing for divorce.”

Made sense.

A man with his money and power…how could he not find us?

If he hadn’t, it was only because he hadn’t bothered to look.

His jaw tightened. “I won’t sign anything!”

He seemed to catch how aggressive he sounded and dialed it back.

“Thessaly, please. Just come home.”

“Elowen is so young. Do you really have the heart for this?”

Mom let out a bitter laugh. “Come home?”

“Come home and share a husband with your sister-in-law?”

“Caelian, I’m not that desperate.”
