At the mention of his sister-in-law, shame flickered across Dad’s face.

“Thessaly, you know how it is. My brother is dead. My parents never liked Ondine to begin with.”

“She was my brother’s wife. She stayed alone for years after he died. I’m just giving her a child, something to make the rest of her life bearable.”

“Thessaly, have you forgotten how my brother treated you? When my parents were against you, remember who spoke up for you?”

“Now he’s dead. His wife is the only thing he left behind. How am I supposed to just watch her suffer?”

At the mention of his brother, Mom seemed to waver.

She looked like she wanted to say something. But she saw his red, worked-up face, and the words died in her throat.

“Besides, Ondine already told me. She doesn’t blame you. She knows you only did it because you were angry.”

“Just come back, I swear I won’t pursue anything. But this baby…this baby stays!”

Mom couldn’t take it anymore. She slapped him. Hard.

“Caelian, let me be clear.”

“I had nothing to do with your precious sister-in-law’s disappearance. I wouldn’t stoop to kidnapping her. For all I know, she staged the whole thing herself.”

“Repay your brother however you want. Give his wife a baby if that’s what you need to do. None of that is my business.”

“We’re getting divorced. I don’t want anything. Just Elowen.”

She looked at me, like she was steeling herself for something.

“You’re impossible!”

“Fine! Then let’s get divorced!”

She gave him one last, deep look. Then she shut the door in his face.

I knew she loved him. For real.

He’d been a massive part of her life for so many years.

Erasing all those memories wasn’t going to be easy.

That thought only made me hate him more.

I couldn’t wrap my head around it. How could he throw away a woman who’d stood by him for so long?

Maybe she’d stopped mattering to him a long time ago.

Maybe Mom and I were the only ones still bleeding from it.

She stared at her account balance with a smile that looked more painful than tears.

By all logic, she should’ve been able to accept this.

But all those years with him. Money couldn’t just erase them.

But I looked at her face, and there was no happiness there.

To her, it was probably just a string of cold, dead numbers.

I figured after the divorce, Dad would give that mistress a legitimate status.

His own kid couldn’t just be left out there.

But time passed, and I didn’t hear a thing about them.

Instead, that mistress called Mom.
