My Cheating Boyfriend Thought I Was Obedient—So I Married Someone Else Chapter 18

I pushed Kael’s hands off me. Inside, I was so calm. So still.

Seeing his pain. His tears. And I felt nothing. Not a single ounce of sadness anymore.

I thought to tnyself-this was it. Finally. After all the wreckage of the past. I was free.

“I don’t remember-“I spoke slowly. “Ever promising you anything. Love? Marriage? Loyalty? never promised you a single thing, Kael.”

“We haven’t been together since I broke up with you two years ago. Isn’t that right?

Agony flooded his eyes. He grabbed me hard. Couldn’t get a single word out.

Does it hurt? Good. Let it hurt. Even pain like this isn’t a tenth of what I carried.

I ran into Lila in the States.

She’d taken the money back then. Left for study abroad the second she graduated. Now she was an executive at a global company.

We sat down for coffee. She thought back to those years. “Honestly. Kael looked at us like we were objects.”

“But the way he looked at you was different. You had to have felt it too. In some moments. You weren’t the same to him.”

Before she left, she patted my shoulder. “Still. I’m really glad you pushed past those moments.”

I said it long ago. Kael Voss was my curse. Rotten as he was, he still pulled at me with something

deadly.

Every step of this road, I had been fighting to overcome those moments.

Kael was like a gambler with no way out. Trying everything he could think of. “What happened last night-call it a one-night stand. Forget it. Forget him. I can pretend nothing happened.”

“A one-night stand?” I looked at him, almost laughed. “You know me better than anyone. I’m known for being a good girl. How could I ever have a one-night stand? I actually like him.”

I liked that face. Liked that young, strong body. Didn’t that count as liking someone?

He bit out the words. “You can act like it was!”

I lifted my chin. Dismissive. “What do you think I am? You?”

Kael’s strength gave out. His grip on my shoulders went slack. But he wouldn’t let go.

I knew what was happening. Our history. His wild, reckless years.

They were driving in now. Like the dullest knife. Sawing straight into the place where it hurt him

most.

I took one small step back. The last bit of space between us finally opened up. “What you can’t let go

of is control. Habit. Not me.”

The wind brushed past. My voice was soft. But every word hit solid. “Don’t come looking for me anymore, Kael.”
