My Cheating Boyfriend Thought I Was Obedient—So I Married Someone Else Chapter 17

I knew exactly what I was doing.

I gave Kael an opening. Same as before.

Over that year, he’d started out apologetic. Then gradually, he slipped back to his old self.

In his eyes, no matter how big the blowup, it was just another ordinary fight.

I was still the good girl he could handle. After the anger and the tears, I’d always come back.

Kael and I tangled like that for a long time. Until I was almost done with school.

The day before he was set to fly home again, he was distracted. Fingers tapping the table. Thinking through something.

Like he was trying to make a hard decision.

I glanced at him. Looked back down at my book.

He curled a smile. “When I come back. I’ll have a surprise for you.

I knew exactly what he was planning to do. Because I was planning a surprise of my own.

So. One week later. Kael flew through the night to get back to my place.

My door was wide open behind me. Nothing hidden. And a man. Shirtless.

Perfect body. Mixed-race beauty. And a very carefully chosen first time.

You’d have to be blind not to know what had happened in this room last night.

Kael crushed his cigarette. Stared across the space at me and Kai Reed.

Then he laughed.

Before he could explode, I patted Kai’s face and told him to leave.

Kai looked at Kael. Raised an eyebrow. That huge frame of his immediately backed down. “He looks intense. No wonder you can’t shake him. I know some people in the local Triads-”

I covered Kai’s mouth and shoved him out. Kael was not someone to mess with.

After Kai left, Kael didn’t come toward me.

I thought he’d rage. But he just stood with his back to me. One hand braced on the car door. Silent

for a long, long time.

When he finally turned around, I saw it. His eyes were red.

He walked toward me. Bent down until he was nearly looking through to the back of my skull.

“Elara Miller.” My name came out through clenched teeth. His eyes rimmed red. “Do you have any idea what I went home to do? I went back to the estate. Stood up to my grandmother. My mother. Told them I was getting married.”

“I went to pick out your wedding dress. I had people designing your ring around the clock. When the design wasn’t right, I had it redone. Over and over-”

“I was telling everyone. Everyone. That I was going to marry you. Elara Song. And what were you doing? You were in bed with another man. Kissing him. Sleeping with him!”

Like a fool. Someone asked if he wasn’t the type to never get married. What changed his mind.

He’d shrugged it off. Said, “I wasn’t against marriage. I just hadn’t met the right person.”

When Kael Voss said those words, the whole room laughed.

He’d honestly believed he hadn’t reached that point. The no-one-else-would-do point.

But people and things. The longer you own them, the harder they are to let go.

He couldn’t stand it anymore. The way she smiled at other men,

Jax was the only one who stopped him. But not for Kael’s sake.

He said, “Stop ruining her life.”

Kael didn’t agree. What kind of talk was that? He and Elara were meant for each other.

If she could’ve really left, she wouldn’t still be by his side now.

He thought, Elara just needed security. Fine. He’d marry her.

These past two years, she never pushed him away. Never shut him out. Like an idiot, he thought that meant they’d made up.

But this whole time, she’d been setting him up. Right here. Waiting for him to walk into it.
