I turned around. Kael Voss stood there with a dark, heavy stare.

I scanned the street around us. Not a dream.

“What are you doing here?” A rush of irritation crawled up my chest.

He jerked his chin up. “Your stuff’s taking up space at my place. Come get it.”

After the smart lock locked me out that day, I never went back. There were definitely things of mine

still in there.

I didn’t even turn around. “Throw it out. I don’t want it.”

“Who gave you the right to just say you don’t want it-” He closed the distance fast and grabbed my arm. His jaw was tight.

Like he was talking about the stuff. And something else.

I looked straight into his eyes. “I got tired of it. Got annoyed. Stopped liking it. So I threw it all away.

That’s my right.”

I’d guessed what would happen if he found out I’d quit and left. At most, he’d sneer and say “Let her

go.”

He was born looking down on the world. Arrogance in his bones.

Even those years of chasing women-in his eyes, that was just exercising power.

Under that power, everyone else was an insect. They were supposed to submit. To obey.

But now. This bitter look. Demanding answers.

I was seeing him lose control. Maybe for the first time.

“Kael. Are you asking me to come back to Manhattan with you?” I asked him straight.

His lips pressed tight. He said nothing.

See. People like him. Even when they regret. Even when they want you back-

They still need to stand above you. Can’t even say the words “Come back with me.”

I shook my head. “Even if I go back, it won’t have anything to do with you. I’m not gambling my

marriage on you. Betting you’ll change.”

“Compared to a breakup, divorce is a real mess.”

He threw it back at me. “And what if… I could do it right?”

I raised an eyebrow. Everything unspoken passed between us.
