My Boyfriend of Six Years Gave My Dowry to Another Girl Chapter 07

I lowered my eyes and said nothing about the date.

The two families continued discussing the wedding. By the time the major details were settled, dawn was breaking outside.

We had barely reached Auremont’s entrance when I heard Lennox coaxing someone nearby.

“Brennan, slow down.”

Brennan was drunk, his entire weight pressed against her.

As we passed, he suddenly slurred a name.

“Ren…”

Mom stopped. I took her arm.

“Let’s go.”

Lennox’s expression stiffened. She looked down at Brennan, clearly embarrassed.

Mom glanced back and frowned.

“Of all the people to run into on a night like this. What a way to ruin the mood.”

She took my hand and pulled me a few steps farther away.

“Keep your distance. You’re getting married, and you don’t need his mess following you into your

new life.”

I didn’t look at Brennan again.

Who he called for when he was drunk couldn’t erase what he had done while sober.

Harlan walked us to the car. Just as I was about to get in, he stopped me.

“Maren, go home and get some rest. I’ll come by later,”

Before I could ask what he meant, Mom pulled me into the car.

“Mom, I didn’t get to ask him…”

The door closed, and she answered without any hurry,

“What else could he mean? He’s bringing over your wedding gift.”

“All right.”

I slept well after we got home. By the time I woke up, it was already evening, and several cars from

the Westcott estate were parked outside.

Staff carried one ivory presentation case after another into the house. Family jewelry, diamonds, luxury watches, and documents for property and trust assets filled the entry hall and stretched into the living room.

Mom was looking over the gifts when she finally glanced at me.

“See? This is what it looks like when a man is serious about building a life with you.”

I sighed.

“Mom…”

She gave a small huff.

“I didn’t mention anyone.”

With the wedding only days away, I barely stopped moving.

There were bridal fittings, gown selections, and a formal engagement photo shoot.

Fortunately, both families had people handling every detail, so I didn’t have to manage much

myself.

I tried on three gowns.

Harlan sat on a couch with a tablet. When I came out in the third dress, he looked up from the

screen.

“This one.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“You said that about the first two.”

Harlan went quiet. He set the tablet aside and studied me more carefully.

“The third one is the best.”

“What makes it better?”

He considered that for a long moment.

“Expensive.”

I snatched the tablet from him and went back to choosing the wedding flowers.

During the engagement shoot, the photographer asked Harlan to put an arm around my waist.

He hesitated, then asked under his breath, “Is that okay?”

The question surprised me, but I nodded.

“Yeah.”

Only then did he rest his hand against my waist.

That was when I realized Harlan wasn’t quite the man I’d always imagined.

The weather was unusually beautiful on our wedding day.

Harlan arrived at the Wrenford residence shortly after noon, and we left for the ceremony together The entire city seemed caught up in the event.

From downtown Crownshore to its outer districts, digital billboards displayed our formal

engagement portraits.

A long motorcade of matching black cars stretched down the drive. I sat in the back of the lead car, and Harlan climbed in beside me.

We had barely pulled away when his phone rang.

I glanced at the screen and couldn’t resist teasing him.

“Which one of your admirers is looking for you now?”

Harlan leaned back in his seat with a resigned expression.

“I was single, not a cheater. The moment I agreed to marry you, I deleted every number that needed

to go. I’m not doing anything that could jeopardize this marriage or our families‘ partnership.”

“What a sacrifice.”

“Glad you appreciate it.”

He answered the video call, and a familiar voice came through the phone.

“Harlan, you’re getting married today too? We even picked the same date. Congratulations. Let’s grab a drink after both receptions are over.”

My fingers stilled.

It was Brennan.

“Sure,” Harlan replied.

Brennan laughed from the other end.

“By the way, you’ve kept her hidden long enough. I still haven’t met your bride. Mind if I say

hello?”

Harlan looked at me without trying to hide the screen.

“Sure.”

I didn’t move away. I simply adjusted the skirt of my gown.

Harlan turned the phone toward me. Brennan was still smiling on the screen.

I met his eyes and greeted him without hesitation.

“Hello, Brennan.”
