My Boyfriend of Six Years Gave My Dowry to Another Girl Chapter 06

The moment Harlan saw me, he asked, “What are you doing down here? I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”

Brennan froze when he saw him.

“Harlan?”

Harlan walked over and naturally took his place beside me.

“Yeah. Congratulations.”

He checked the time, then turned to me.

“Your dad’s been trying to find you. He couldn’t reach you, so he asked me to bring you over.

Brennan’s gaze moved from me to Harlan.

“Are you getting engaged tonight?”

Harlan nodded.

“Yeah.”

Brennan frowned.

“Why didn’t you tell me? I thought we were friends.”

“It was a last–minute decision.”

Brennan pressed him.

“Who?”

Harlan glanced at me before giving Brennan a friendly pat on the shoulder.

“I’ll introduce you another day. I need to get Maren to her father first. I’ll come back and talk to you

later.”

Brennan visibly relaxed.

Harlan told them to enjoy themselves, then led me into the elevator.

As the doors began to close, I heard Brennan mutter, “For a second, I thought she was the one.”

Lennox asked curiously, “Who?”

Brennan shook his head.

“It’s nothing. Come on, let’s keep celebrating.”

Once the doors closed, I turned to Harlan.

“Why didn’t you just tell him?”

Harlan pressed the button for the first floor.

“This marriage affects both families. Until everything’s final, I don’t want any surprises.”

I tilted my head.

“Are you actually worried about Brennan?”

“I’m not worried about him.”

Harlan clicked his tongue.

“I just don’t want him changing his mind. Until our families have met, I don’t want him

interfering.”

“You’re overthinking it.”

Harlan shrugged.

“I hope so. I hate complications.”

The elevator stopped on the first floor.

Both sets of parents had been waiting for quite some time in a private conference room at the back of Auremont’s first floor.

If Mom hadn’t spoken to me earlier, Dad would’ve thought I’d changed my mind and run.

When Harlan and I entered, all four parents smiled.

Coffee, bottled water, and documents covered the conference table. The two families had clearly been talking for a while, and the atmosphere was surprisingly warm.

Mom stood as soon as she saw me and took my hand.

“There you are, sweetheart. I told your father you’d come, but he kept insisting you’d run off.”

I sighed.

“Mom.”

She lowered her voice, though she couldn’t hide her smile.

“Your father got so worked up his heart condition nearly flared up. He had to take two pills before

we left.”

ad coughed beside her.

“Why would you tell her that?”

Mom shot him a look.

“Weren’t you the one who kept telling me to call her? You were about ready to send someone out to drag her here.”

Dad looked uncomfortable.

“I never said that.”

The room filled with laughter, and my throat tightened unexpectedly.

Six years ago, I’d chosen Brennan despite my parents‘ objections. They hadn’t approved, but they hadn’t stopped me either.

When I said I didn’t want their money, they let me follow him into that basement apartment.

Looking back, the whole thing felt absurd.

Harlan and I were the only heirs to our respective families. No matter how I looked at it, this marriage had no downside.

The discussions about shares, business projects, the wedding, and our financial arrangements after marriage went smoothly.

The longer Dad looked at Harlan, the more pleased he seemed. He even poured Harlan a cup of coffee himself.

“Here, Harlan. We had this brought over from the house.”

“Thank you, Mr. Wrenford.”

Harlan accepted it with a perfectly respectable smile. He looked nothing like the man who had been surrounded by women upstairs.

The wedding planner beside Dad adjusted his glasses.

“All right.”

Our family had worked with him on major events for years, and everyone turned toward him.

After checking the calendar on his tablet, he looked up.

“The best date available is August 17.”

My hand stilled around my coffee cup.

Ms. Westcott smiled.

“August 17? That works. It’s short notice, but we still have time to arrange everything.”

Dad nodded in agreement.

“Then that’s the date.”

The two families reached an agreement almost instantly. I was the only one who said nothing as

stared at the date on the screen.

August 17.

Only a few hours earlier, Brennan had announced that exact wedding date on Instagram.
