My Boyfriend of Six Years Gave My Dowry to Another Girl Chapter 08

Brennan’s smile froze.

He stared at the screen for several long seconds. When he finally spoke, his voice was low and.

trembling.

“Maren? What the hell?”

I said nothing.

Brennan sat up abruptly.

“Why are you in Harlan’s car on his wedding day?”

“Wait.”

Then something clicked, and the color slowly drained from his face.

“That night at Auremont… You were the fiancée Harlan was talking about.”

He glared at me through the screen.

“When did you two get together? You went to him the same day we broke up? Were you really that desperate to get married?”

I looked out the window.

“We’re almost at the hotel, so I have to go. Congratulations on your wedding.”

“Maren, wait!”

Harlan had already ended the call.

Brennan called back almost immediately.

Our car rounded the corner and stopped in front of the hotel, where my parents were already

waiting.

The moment the door opened, confetti cannons went off and bright streamers filled the air. Cheers and laughter erupted around us.

Mom helped me out of the car, and the rest of the wedding went more smoothly than I had expected.

The officiant offered a brief blessing before Harlan and I exchanged rings. At the reception, we poured Champagne into a tower of glasses. –

Mom sat near the stage, beaming as she clapped and cheered.

The Wrenford–Westcott wedding became the talk of Crownshore. Our extended families attended,

along with executives and business leaders connected to both companies.

Harlan and I hadn’t planned to make the rounds, but the guests still gathered around Dad and Mr.

Westcott to offer congratulations and toast the marriage.

I had only eaten a few bites of my reception dinner when one of our bodyguards approached..

“Ms. Wrenford, Brennan Keene is outside.”

“Don’t let him in. Send him away,” I said evenly.

The bodyguard didn’t leave immediately. Instead, his eyes flicked to Harlan.

“He says he’s here to see you, Mr. Westcott.”

Harlan set down his fork.

“Me?”

He wiped his hands with a napkin.

“I’ll go talk to him. If I don’t make things clear, he won’t let this go.

Harlan stood and looked down at me.

“Wait for me.”

I nodded, and he left with the bodyguard.

I didn’t follow them. There was no reason to.

Harlan returned a little over ten minutes later, and I didn’t ask a single question.

Some things were better left alone.

The reception continued into the evening. By the time we returned to the Westcott estate, I was too tired to speak.

The sprawling grounds were decked out for the wedding, bright and festive.

I was about to go inside when I felt someone watching me.

I turned and saw someone half–hidden behind a tree. The figure was too far away for me to make

out a face.

Still, I was fairly sure I knew who it was.

Harlan followed my gaze.

“Do you want to go over there?”

I looked away.

“No.”

We walked inside together as the gates slowly closed behind us.

Even as the gates closed completely behind us, I never looked back.

Harlan and I might not have married for love, but from the moment we agreed to it, we both knew

exactly what we were doing.

There was calculation and mutual benefit, but nothing about it felt sordid.

For me, that was enough.

As for Brennan, it was over, and that was all there was to it.

The moment I walked through the Westcott gates, I stepped into the next chapter of my life.

My life was never meant to be small. It was meant to be rich and vibrant.

Here’s to a happy marriage.
