My Boyfriend of Six Years Gave My Dowry to Another Girl Chapter 05

The manager shook his head with an awkward smile.

“I’m afraid I don’t know.”

“All right.”

After a few more polite words, he left with the staff.

I’d heard enough and headed for the elevator to go back upstairs. Someone called out behind me just as I reached it.

“Brennan, isn’t that Maren? Did she really come here for you?”

I pressed the elevator button without turning around.

“Don’t be mad at her. You were together for six years. Of course she’d want to see the woman you chose in the end. That’s only natural.”

“We saw her outside earlier. She’s probably been watching you for a while.”

The elevator arrived. Just as I started inside, someone stepped into my path.

“Maren.”

I looked at Brennan.

“Do you need something?”

He stared at me, his annoyance obvious.

“Drop the act. There’s no point.”

I frowned.

“What act?”

“You followed me here because you wanted to see Lennox, didn’t you? You could’ve told me. I would’ve introduced you. There was no reason to creep around and spy on us.”

“There was no reason to creep around and spy on us.”

I almost laughed, but he kept going.

“Following us around and hiding in the background isn’t like you.”

He turned and beckoned as if he were doing me a favor.

“Come here.”

Lennox hurried over and looped her arm through his.

She wore a simple white dress and really was young and beautiful. Standing beside Brennan, she lightly tugged at his sleeve.

“Brennan.”

She looked at me with a sweet smile.

“You must be Maren. Hi.”

I nodded.

“Hi.”

Something about my response seemed to catch her off guard.

Brennan frowned too.

“Maren, you don’t have to pretend. I know you’re angry, but acting like you don’t care isn’t you. I know this hurts, but there’s nothing I can do. Lennox and I are simply a better fit.”

I gave him a perfunctory smile.

“Sure. Good for you.”

I pressed the elevator button again, but Brennan stepped in front of me once more.

His face tightened.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

I took a slow breath.

“You don’t need to keep trying to prove something to me. I’m not interested in your relationship. Please move. You’re blocking the elevator.”

Brennan’s expression hardened.

“I’m just trying to make you face reality. You’re not getting any younger, Maren. If you still want someone to marry you, lower your expectations and stop demanding that a man prove himself with money.”

I nodded.

“Got it. Can you move now?”

The elevator chimed, and the doors slowly opened.

Harlan stepped out.
