My Best Friend Feared Marriage, but Wanted My Boyfriend as Groom Chapter 07

After I left, Ethan and Natalie went home.

Ethan sat on the couch with his face buried in his hands, refusing to look at the messages flooding his

phone.

They all said essentially the same thing.

Everyone was furious that he had let Claire, their biggest cash cow, walk away. They demanded to know if he had lost his mind and told him to go after her immediately.

Ethan cursed under his breath.

Did they really think he did not want Claire back?

The problem was that Claire had changed. This time, she was nothing like the woman he had known. It was almost as if someone else had taken her place.

He had been with Claire for eight years. He knew her better than anyone.

She had always been quiet and reserved. She hated confrontation and rarely stood up for herself. If he had to put it bluntly, she had always been a little too soft.

And that was exactly why Ethan had cheated on her without a second thought.

He had always believed that even if Claire found out, she would never actually do anything about it.

At worst, she would cry, throw a little tantrum, and act like a hurt girlfriend.

She would never leave him.

After all, she could not possibly survive without him.

Her bank cards were even in his possession.

Where could she possibly go if she left him?

But why?

Why had Claire become so furious this time? Why was she even willing to team up with Ryan just to take him

down?

None of this fit the Claire he knew.

What the hell had happened to her?

Natalie glared at Ethan from across the room, furious.

“This is all your fault!” she snapped. “Someone at the company dug up Claire’s identity. Then they found out Itouldn’t even get Claire detained Now everyone’s starting to question who I really am. They’re calling me a homewrecker!”

Ethan pinched the bridge of his nose and ignored her.

He had never intended for Natalie to be anything more than a fling.

Unlike Claire, who was predictable and reserved, Natalie was exciting. She was wild, uninhibited, and always up for anything.

Claire had always been so rigid. She never knew how to let loose or enjoy herself it bed.

But now, as Ethan watched Natalie sob and carry on, the same woman he had once found irresistible

suddenly looked unbearably annoying.

Maybe he really was an idiot.

How had he let himself get involved with this woman just for a little excitement, only to end up in this mess?

Irritated, Ethan stood up.

“Where are you going?” Natalie demanded. “You’re not leaving me, are you?”

Ethan forced a smile.

“I’m going to see Claire’s mother. Mrs. Bennett has always liked me. She has been waiting for Claire and me to get married. If I talk to her, she won’t just stand by and watch Claire and me fall apart. There’s still a

chance to fix this.”

Natalie’s eyes filled with tears.

“What about me, Ethan? What am I to you?”

A wave of irritation swept through him, but he forced himself to stay calm.

“I told you, nothing is going to happen. Claire and I are only going through the motions. I would never abandon you.”

Natalie stared at him, biting her lip.

“I need to tell you something, but you can’t tell anyone. Promise me.”

Without letting her notice, Ethan tapped the recording button on his phone.

“Go ahead,” he said softly.

Natalie lowered her voice.

“I told Claire’s mother about us. Then… she got so worked up that she fell from the balcony.”

Ethan’s eyes flickered.

Natalie hurried to defend herself.

“I swear I didn’t mean for that to happen. I had no idea she would react like that…”

A surge of excitement exploded inside Ethan.

This was exactly what he needed.

With this recording, Claire would have no choice but to forgive him.

All he had to do was send Natálie to prison for causing her mother’s death and make sure Claire got justice.

Then, no matter how badly he had wronged Claire, she would forgive him.

With that thought in mind, Ethan forced himself to comfort Natalie.

“It’s okay. Don’t be scared. I’ll go talk to Claire. Just stay here and don’t worry.”
