My Best Friend Feared Marriage, but Wanted My Boyfriend as Groom Chapter 08

My Best Friend Feared Marriage, but Wanted My Boyfriend as Groom Chapter 08

I thought Ryan was taking me to see the company.

Instead, he drove me to a cemetery.

He smiled as he gestured toward the hillside.

“You can see the whole valley from here. It’s quiet, peaceful, and private. I specifically picked one of the best memorial lots in the entire cemetery. Your mother will be comfortable here.”

I looked at his carefree grin, and an unexpected warmth spread through my chest.

So much had happened over the past two days.

After I had my mother cremated, I had not even had time to arrange her burial. All my bank cards were still in Ethan’s possession, and I had barely been able to take care of myself.

I never expected Ryan to take care of everything for me.

My nose stung, and I almost burst into tears.

“Thank you.

Ryan smiled.

“Don’t get all emotional on me. This is just employee care.”

He still looked as carefree as ever, but I knew what was underneath that easygoing exterior.

Ryan had the most thoughtful and considerate heart of anyone I had ever known.

Then I heard someone call my name from behind me.

“Claire!”

I turned around.

It was Ethan.

My brow furrowed as I stared at him in disgust.

“What are you doing here?”

But Ethan did not seem bothered by my attitude.

Instead, he held up his phone like he had just brought me the greatest gift in the world.

“I know how your mother died!”

The words hit me like a punch to the chest.

I almost lust control and rushed over to demand answers.

But somehow, I managed to keep myself calm.

“How do you know?”

At the same time, I discreetly switched on my voice recorder.

Ethan looked smug.

“I know how much your mother meant to you.”

“When Natalie tried to stop me from seeing your mother, I kept pressing her until she finally told me what happened when she went to see your mother. If you marry me and transfer the patent back to me, I’ll give you the evidence immediately. You can finally get justice for your mother.”

I stared at him coldly.

“Play the recording. Otherwise, how am I supposed to know whether it’s real? For all I know, you’re just

lying to me.”

Ethan did not suspect a thing.

He tapped the recording.

Natalie’s voice filled the air.

The moment I heard it, hatred surged through me.

For a second, I thought I was going to lose control completely.

But I forced myself to hold it together.

When the recording ended, Ethan looked at me with excitement.

“Claire, can we get back together now? If we reconcile, the board will forgive me. Your mother’s death will finally get the justice it deserves!”

Ryan looked at me, worry written all over his face. He seemed like he wanted to say something, but held

back.

I reached over and squeezed his hand, silently telling him not to worry.

Then I pulled out my phone and smiled coldly.

“Ethan, have you ever heard of accessory after the fact?”

His expression changed slightly.

“I recorded everything you just said. So whether you want to testify or not, you’re going to testify. Otherwise, you’ll be covering up Natalie’s crime.”

Ethan froze.

Ryan could not hold back a laugh.

“Brilliant. That’s my girl.”

Ethan glared at me with pure hatred.

“Claire! You really think I won’t do anything to you?”

His expression turned vicious.

“Fine. Then let’s die together.”

He pulled a knife from his pocket and charged straight at me.

I barely had time to react.

Ryan grabbed me and yanked me out of the way.

I hit the ground hard.

Ethan, meanwhile, went sprawling face-first onto the ground.

The security guards finally reacted. They rushed forward and restrained him.

Ryan immediately turned to me.

“Are you okay?”

I felt something warm spreading through my lower abdomen.

I looked down.

Blood was slowly pooling beneath me.

Panic seized me.

Ryan’s face went pale with fear as he immediately pulled out his phone and called 911.

In the ambulance, the pain in my lower abdomen grew worse by the minute.

I clung desperately to Ryan’s hand.

I wanted to say something, anything, but fear had stolen every word from me.

All I couli do was hold on

His hand was warm.

He squeezed mine firmly

“Don’t be scared. I’m right here.”

But in the end, I still lost my baby.

After the surgery, I lay motionless in my hospital bed, staring blankly out the window.

Ryan walked in carrying a bowl of chicken noodle soup.

He tried to comfort me.

“Babies know things. Maybe the little one saw that Ethan Carter was the father and decided it didn’t want to be born into a family like that.”

His ridiculous comment made me laugh.

For the first time since everything happened, the grief eased just a little.

I looked at him.

“What happened to Ethan and Natalie?”

Ryan gave me a smug grin.

“Don’t worry. I hired the best lawyer I could find. Those two are going to spend the rest of their lives behind

bars.”

He looked at me and smiled.

“From now on, there won’t be any more garbage cluttering up your life.”

I turned toward the sunset outside the window.

“Yeah.”

My voice was soft.

“From now on, my life will finally be clear sailing.”

For the first time in years, there was no darkness hanging over my future.

Only sunlight and a sky blazing with color.
