My Best Friend Feared Marriage, but Wanted My Boyfriend as Groom Chapter 06

My Best Friend Feared Marriage, but Wanted My Boyfriend as Groom Chapter 06

I was stunned by how quickly his attitude had changed.

When he reached for me, immediately stepped out of his grasp.

Ethan didn’t get angry.

Instead, he looked at me with an almost giddy smile.

“Claire, this is incredible. We’ve been waiting so long for this baby, and now it’s finally happening.”

“You told me once that if we ever had a child, we’d get married. Now we’re having à baby. So let’s get

married, okay?”

He crawled closer on his knees, desperation written all over his face.

“We’ll be husband and wife. We’ll be a family. Just give the patent rights back to me. Please. Don’t give them

to Ryan.”

“I know I’ve been awful lately. I know I screwed up. But you’re still the woman I love most in this world.”

His eyes were pleading.

“You remember what you said, don’t you? If we had a boy, we’d name him Liam. If it was a girl, we’d call her

Mia.”

“We were supposed to have the perfect family.”

His voice broke.

“Please, Claire. For the baby’s sake, marry me.”

Ryan suddenly snorted with laughter.

“Oh, I get it now.”

He folded his arms.

“Claire’s pregnant, so you’re trying to cash in on the situation. At the end of the day, you just want her to

use the baby as an excuse to keep supporting you while you keep living off her success.”

Ethan’s face immediately turned bright red.

“Ryan! This has nothing to do with you. Shut up!”

I looked at Ryan.

He patted my hand, silently telling me to let him handle it.

Ryan looked down at Ethan,

“you’re really asking her to take you back, the least your can do is show some good faith.”

He gave Ethan a pointed ok./

“Didn’t you just call the cops and accuse Claire of assault? Weren’t you practically screaming that this had nothing to do with some petty relationship dispute?”

He smiled.

“So what happened? Now it’s suddenly a private family matter?”

I immediately understood what Ryan was getting at.

I turned toward Ethan, my voice ice-cold.

“Exactly. Weren’t you desperate to have the police arrest me a few minutes ago?”

I smiled faintly.

“I can’t sign a patent license agreement for you from a jail cell.”

Ethan immediately spun toward the officers.

“Officer, we’re dropping the charges! We don’t want to press charges anymore!”

The officer looked at him with faint amusement.

“Sir, you weren’t the one who filed the complaint. Miss Natalie Brooks was.’

Natalie tried to argue, but one vicious glare from Ethan shut her down.

She clenched her jaw.

“I’m dropping it.”

Ethan’s eyes immediately lit up.

He turned toward me and stared.

“Claire, now you can sign the patent license over to me, right?”

I let out a cold laugh.

“Why are you in such a hurry? The withdrawal paperwork hasn’t even been completed yet. How do I know you won’t change your mind the second you get what you want?”

The officer handed Ethan the waiver paperwork.

Ethan snatched it and shoved it into Natalie’s hands.

Natalie’s eyes filled with tears.

“I’m not signing this! Claire humiliated me in front of everyone today. How am I supposed to show my face

in our social circle after this?’

Ethan lowered his voice, his tone turning threatening.

“Sign it. Now.”

“You don’t sign, and we’re both finished today.”

Natalie stared at him through tear-filled eyes.

In the end, she had no choice but to sign the withdrawal.

Once the officer handed Ryan the official confirmation that the complaint had been dropped, Ryan chuckled.

“Well, I have to admit, I’m impressed.”

He looked Ethan up and down.

“Our Mr. Carter really knows how to swallow his pride when his career is on the line.”

Then his smile widened.

“Since everything’s been taken care of, I’m afraid I have one little piece of devastating news for you.”

Ryan casually slipped an arm around my shoulder.

“Claire signed an exclusive, perpetual patent agreement with my company a long time ago.”

“In other words, you’re never getting your hands on that patent. Not today. Not next year. Not ever.”

Ethan froze.

He looked at me in disbelief.

“Claire… is that true?”

I gave him a small nod.

Something inside Ethan snapped.

His face twisted with rage.

“You set me up!”

“You two deliberately tricked me!”

Ryan scoffed.

‘Funny. You’ve spent plenty of time screwing Claire over yourself.”

Ethan suddenly turned toward the police.

“I want to press charges against them! I want her arrested!”

The officer stared at him like he had completely lost his mind.

Then he held up the freshly signed paperwork.

“I’m afraid that won’t be happening, Mr. Carter. You and your companion just signed legally binding waivers withdrawing the complaint.”

Ethan’s legs gave out beneath him.

He collapsed onto the floor.

Ryan turned toward me and extended his hand with an easy smile.

“Beautiful, how about you come with me? I want to show you something.”

I had no idea what he had planned.

But one thing was certain. I had no intention of wasting another second dealing with Ethan.

I reached for Ryan’s hand.

Together, we walked away.

Behind us, Ethan’s furious voice echoed through the room.

“Claire! I’ll never forgive you for this!”
