My Best Friend Feared Marriage, but Wanted My Boyfriend as Groom Chapter 05

Ryan was the one who showed up.

He was as cocky and carefree as ever, casually draping one arm over my shoulder as he stood behind me. Somehow, just having him there made me feel safe.

Ethan stared at me in disbelief.

“You… you’re pregnant? When did this happen?”

I gave him a cold smile.

“Is that really what matters right now? Ethan, you already have someone new. Why do you care what happens to your ex? Shouldn’t you be more concerned about watching your little business empire collapse?”

Ethan immediately pulled out his phone and checked his company’s stock price.

Today was the launch of their new product line for the upcoming quarter. Under normal circumstances, the

stock should have surged.

Instead, it had absolutely tanked.

The moment Ethan unlocked his phone, dozens of notifications flooded the screen. There were already more

than ninety-nine unread messages, and his phone could barely keep up.

He looked at me.

“What did you do?”

I gave him a cold laugh.

“I did what I had to do.”

His phone suddenly rang.

It was his assistant, Ben Foster.

Ethan answered.

“Mr. Carter!” Ben sounded frantic. “We have a serious problem! Our new product has been accused of copying Ryan’s company’s design. They’ve produced a patent certificate showing that Miss Bennett authorized the patent to them. We have absolutely nothing to counter it with!”

Ben’s voice grew more panicked.

“Legal has already reviewed the case. We have virtually no chance of winning!”

“And it’s already all over the news. The stock price is crashing, and the board is demanding an explanation.

They’re talking about removing you as CEO!”

Ethan stared at me in shock.

“Claire Bennett! How could you do this to me? Why would you betray me?”

His shamelessness actually stunned me.

I pointed toward Natalie.

“Betray you? Ethan, are you seriously asking me that? You were the one who just said we had nothing to do with each other anymore. Do you need me to remind you exactly how you treated me?”

Ethan’s face cycled through several shades of red and green.

Before he could say another word, his phone rang again.

This time, it was the Chairman of the Board.

The moment Ethan answered, the Chairman’s furious voice exploded through the speaker.

“Ethan, listen carefully. I don’t care what you have to do. Beg if you have to. Get Claire Bennett back.”

His voice was ice-cold.

“What the hell were you thinking, handing a chief designer of Claire’s caliber over to Ryan’s company? Do you have any idea how much damage your stupidity has done to this company?”

Natalie’s eyes flashed with resentment.

“It’s just Claire! How much damage could one person possibly do to a company?”

There was a brief silence on the other end.

Then came a chilling laugh.

“‘Just Claire’?”

“Do you have any idea how many industry awards Claire’s designs have won? Do you know how much of this company’s revenue she’s driven over the years? Do you have any idea how many major sponsors and key clients she brought in herself?”

“Ethan, did you really think we made you CEO because you had any actual talent? Your management skills wouldn’t even impress an intern.”

“You were put in that chair because you were Claire’s boyfriend. We thought you could keep her tied to this company.”

“Let’s be honest. You were nothing more than a beneficiary of her success. Without Claire, you wouldn’t

even get an interview on Wall Street.”

The call ended before Ethan could get a single word in.

Natalie glared at me, hatred practically pouring from her eyes.

Ryan let out a mocking laugh from behind me.

“So our illustrious Mr. Carter was nothing more than a glorified freeloader riding his girlfriend’s coattails.

And here I thought you were some big-shot executive.’

He shook his head.

“Too bad you had terrible judgment, Mr. Carter. You couldn’t even tell who was actually taking you

money.”

He gave Ethan a lazy smile.

“Look at you now. No girlfriend, no patent, and pretty soon, no CEO title either.”

I stared coldly at Ethan.

Then, without warning, he dropped to his knees in front of me.

His expression suddenly lit up with excitement.

“Claire, we’re having a baby!”

His voice trembled with joy.

“That’s amazing. We’re finally having a baby!”
