My Best Friend Changed Boyfriends Weekly… Until She Chose My Ten-Year Fiancé Chapter 08

When I came back from work, the light in the apartment was on.

Out of habit, I grabbed the box cutter by the door. The moment I walked in, I smelled food.

Damon came out of the kitchen wearing a pink apron.

“You’re back? I made a lot of dishes.”

“I asked the doctor, and he said fractures need extra nourishment. I’ve been simmering a bone-broth stew for hours. It’s almost ready.”

“How do you feel? Dizzy? Does your chest still hurt?”

My grip on my keys tightened.

I stared at him. “Damon, I’ve said this clearly. We’re over.”

He froze for a second, then forced a smile.

“Babe, let’s not do this, okay?”

Hearing that old nickname, I paused for a moment.

In all ten years with Damon, that’s what he’d always called me.

Our friends were always asking how we’d stayed together so long and still acted so clingy.

But ever since he got together with Chloe, he’d stopped calling me Babe and started using my name instead.

Hearing it again now, I felt nothing.

Only disgust.

He tried to take my hand.

I shoved both hands into my pockets and dodged his touch.

He smiled helplessly. “Be as mad as you want, but eat first. Then you can tear into me all you like, okay?”

It was always like this.

In ten years, we’d fought countless times.

Most of the time, I was the one who gave in.

Except when the fights got really bad, then he’d use that placating tone, just like now.

Everyone said we’d lasted so long because he was always willing to swallow his pride and make up with me.

But the truth was, every single time, I was the one stretched to my breaking point.

I just always caved the second I heard that tone of his.

No matter how big the fight, it would dissolve.

But only I knew the fights never really went away. I just kept swallowing them.

I looked at the dishes on the table.

Each one looked and smelled incredible – even more exquisite than the dishes Chloe had sent me.

But after ten years, this was the first time I got to taste his cooking.

I looked at him. “Damon, that trick doesn’t work anymore.”

He froze, and when he looked at me, his eyes were slightly red.

“Babe, I’m sorry.”

“I didn’t block you on purpose. I didn’t know you were hurt that badly in the accident.”

“I swear, I’m really done with Chloe. I’ll never see her again.”

“I only made one mistake. Give me a chance. Let’s start over, okay?”

“We’ve been together so long. Can’t you forgive me just this once?”

I shook my head. “No.”

“It’s too late to remember our ten years now.”
