My Best Friend Changed Boyfriends Weekly… Until She Chose My Ten-Year Fiancé Chapter 01

My best friend changed boyfriends every week.

I’d been with Damon for ten years.

Then, minutes before my flight, Chloe posted on social media:

[New boyfriend for the week. Like this post to apply.]

Damon’s profile picture appeared beneath it.

I refreshed the page.

She’d made it official.

In the photo, their fingers were intertwined. On their hands were the matching promise rings I’d custom-made for them.

I turned around and rushed straight home.

When I confronted Damon, his reply was chillingly casual.

[I just wanted to try it.]

I stared at his message, my hands shaking.

[We’re supposed to get our marriage license next week.]

His answer made my stomach drop.

[It’s been ten years, Lindsay. I need something new.]

By the time I reached our apartment, clothes were scattered across the living room floor.

Chloe’s eyes glistened.

“Now I finally get why Lindsay could stay with you for so long.”

“She won’t blame us, will she?”

Damon pulled her close.

“She won’t. She can’t bear to let go.”

Then I heard them kissing.

I swallowed the nausea rising in my stomach and canceled the marriage license appointment we’d set for the following week.

…………

The confirmation chime rang out.

The lovey-dovey couple turned to look at me.

Damon froze for a second, his voice still thick and hoarse.

“Why are you back? Did you forget something?”

I stared at him. “Why?”

He buttoned his shirt unhurriedly.

“Lindsay, we’ve been together for ten years. It got boring. I just wanted to see what it felt like to be with someone else.”

“You really should take lessons from Chloe, though. She knows a lot of tricks.”

Chloe finished dressing and gave him a little push, then smiled at me.

“Lindsay, don’t worry.”

“You know me. I won’t stay with him.”

“It’s only a week. Think of it as your best friend adding some excitement to your love life.”

Hearing that, Damon let out a cold laugh.

He grabbed her and kissed her deeply.

I couldn’t help but scream.

“Enough.”

“Damon, we’re done.”

I looked at Chloe, and through that face, I saw her at sixteen.

I’d known her longer than I’d known Damon.

Back in school, I was practically invisible.

During the relay race at the school sports day, someone knocked me off the track.

Nobody in our class noticed. Only she came running over, crouched down carefully to help me up, then gave me a piggyback ride to the school nurse’s office.

I still remember that day.

Her skirt brushed across my face as she crouched, and her perfume — loud and warm — wrapped around me. For the next twelve years, that scent meant safety.

But I never once imagined she’d end up in bed with my fiancé.

Chloe’s lips were red from the kiss.

She pushed Damon away and came over to grab my hand, shaking it playfully.

“Lindsay, don’t be mad. Don’t say things you don’t mean.”

“You’re getting married soon, and I just don’t feel safe handing you over to him. I was only training him for you.”

“It won’t affect your license appointment next week.”

I let out a soft laugh and shook her hand off. “Chloe, you’re disgusting.”

Her eyes instantly turned red, and she wobbled as if about to fall.

Damon stepped forward and shoved me aside, pulling her tightly into his arms.

His gaze turned colder by the second. “Lindsay, if you have a temper, take it out on me. Don’t hurt her.”

I stumbled backward.

The small of my back slammed into the corner of the table, and the pain brought tears to my eyes.

He reached out to me on reflex.

I hid my hands behind my back, a bitter ache rising in my chest.

Right after I first got together with Damon, at a company dinner, a drunk caused a scene and a bottle came flying at me.

He’d shielded me then just like he was shielding Chloe now.

He’d needed eighteen stitches in his head afterward.

Every time he touched that ugly scar, he’d say, still shaken, that he was glad the bottle hadn’t hit me.

Chloe tugged at him.

“Don’t talk to Lindsay like that. Careful she actually leaves you, and then you’ll be the one panicking.”

He laughed lightly. “We’ve been together ten years. If she doesn’t want me, who else would she want?”

Watching them hold each other, it felt like someone was squeezing my heart. I couldn’t breathe.

As I turned to leave, Damon let go of Chloe and grabbed my wrist.

His brow furrowed.

“It’s late. Where are you going?”

My phone buzzed. A colleague who was supposed to travel with me was asking when I’d arrive.

He glanced at my screen and let out a relieved smile.

“Go ahead. Be careful.”

“When you get back, we’ll go get the license.”

The moment I turned away, the tears wouldn’t stop falling.

On the way to the airport, I opened the company’s internal work messaging platform.

There was a relocation application form waiting for me. The destination was a city several states away.

I wiped my tears and tapped Apply.
