My Best Friend Changed Boyfriends Weekly… Until She Chose My Ten-Year Fiancé Chapter 07

The next day, Carol – the colleague I used to travel with – reached out.

She said Damon had called her several times.

“He thinks you’re on a business trip with me again. He kept asking where you were.”

“What did you tell him?”

“I said you weren’t with me. He flat-out refused to believe it.”

“Apparently he went to the office looking for you and asked HR for your travel approval form.”

“Does he not know you were in a car accident last week?”

My hand paused mid-page as I flipped through project files.

“No. He doesn’t know.”

“That explains it. HR said he asked why your trip last week turned into sick leave. When he found out about

the accident, he was stunned for a long time.”

“He looked really shaken when he left.”

I remembered the company’s leave approval process. I’d uploaded my medical records.

They showed the time I was admitted to the hospital that day, along with the diagnosis report.

That evening, I’d just gotten back to my apartment.

My mother called again.

Her voice was unusually tense.

“Lindsay? You were in a car accident last week? Why didn’t you tell us?”

“Is it serious? How are you doing now?”

My grip on the phone tightened.

“Mom, I called you,”

“You didn’t pick up.”

“Because you said you were afraid I’d call just to badmouth Chloe.”

She was silent for a long time.

I knew Damon was right next to her.

But he didn’t say a word.

“Are you okay now, then?”

“Damon said you applied for a transfer? Why go so far away? When are you coming back?”

My voice was very soft. “I’m fine now.”

“I’m not planning to come back.”

Damon finally couldn’t hold it in.

“Lindsay, it’s over between me and Chloe.”

“I was only with her for seven days. Do you really have to make this big a deal of it?”

“You didn’t even tell us you were in the hospital. Your mom, your dad, and me – we were all worried about

you.”

My mended ribs ached dully.

“Worried about me?”

“When I was in that accident, I called you.”

“What were you doing? You were in bed with Chloe.”

“So you wouldn’t be disturbed, you blocked me when I needed you most.”

“While I was lying in the hospital, you were all worrying about Chloe’s miscarriage and treasuring every second of your happy little four-person family.”

“Don’t you think it’s a little late to be worried about me now?”

The line was quiet for a long time.

Just when I thought they’d hung up, three words came through, very soft.

“I’m sorry.”

I froze for a second. I didn’t answer.

I hung up.

But I never expected Damon to follow me all the way here.
