When our daughter Eira Varron fell gravely ill, I knelt and begged him.

“Just say the words. Save our pup.”

But he was on a video call with another woman.

“Don’t cry, Poppy. Your little cat is what matters. I’ll save him.”

He turned to me, cold and detached.

I’d barely hit post when Caius—who usually couldn’t be bothered to text back more than “k”—was suddenly video-calling me.

“Ravenna, Do you not understand what a joke is?”

“You have to curse Poppy over this?”

“She raised that kitten herself for three months, and now it’s sick. You don’t even care—you just love making her feel like crap.”

“Apologize, or next moon you can forget about me saving that useless little pup.”

Staring at his handsome face, twisted with rage on the screen, I hit record.

“Caius Varron, in your heart, is our daughter worth less than her cat?”

Caius didn’t hesitate.

“Of course. He’s not just some cat—he’s Poppy’s familiar. She delivered him herself. That actually means something.”

“Stop using that worthless girl to guilt me.”

I couldn’t listen anymore. I hung up and sent the recording to my matriarch.

Once a month, Caius could speak one sentence to a dying person or animal—”I will add years to your life”, and pull them back from death.

The moment I spoke, Poppy—who’d been faking her dry heaves—suddenly spat a mouthful of blood.

“Poppy!”

Caius hung up instantly and rushed her to the hospital.

Poppy’s eyes brimmed with tears. She looked at Caius, fragile.

Caius wrapped a protective arm around her shoulders, a flicker of pain in his eyes.
