My Adopted Sister’s Rage Was Only for Me,So After Rebirth I Fought Back Chapter 04

The figure in the bed lay with her back to the door, her long hair fanned across the pillow.

The room was filled with the gardenia perfume I always wore.

Lily stood beside the bed and watched her for several seconds.

“Natalie,” she whispered.

The woman didn’t answer.

After waiting long enough to make sure she wouldn’t wake, Lily pulled the paring knife from the pocket of her nightgown. She gripped the handle with both hands, aimed for the heart

beneath the covers, and drove the blade down.

Blood soaked through the comforter in an instant. Her body convulsed, a muffled scream tearing from her throat.

Lily didn’t stop. She pulled out the knife and stabbed her again.

“Why won’t you just die?

“Once you’re gone, Mom, Dad, and Ethan will all be mine.”

As the second blow landed, the woman began to struggle desperately.

The bedside lamp crashed to the floor, and the noise woke the entire house.

“What’s happening? Natalie!”

Footsteps pounded down the hall. Ethan was the first to burst through the door.

In the dim light from the hallway, he saw Lily standing beside the bed with a knife. The woman

he thought was me lay drenched in blood, her face hidden by long hair.

“Lily, put down the knife!”

Ethan lunged forward and wrestled it away.

Dad rushed in behind him and hurried to the bed.

“Natalie! What happened?”

Blood had saturated the comforter, pajamas, and pillow. The woman’s face was smeared with it, and she appeared to be unconscious. No one questioned whether the person in that bed was

really me.

“Call 911!”

The housekeeper pulled out his phone with shaking hands.

“Don’t!” Ethan seized his wrist.

The housekeeper stared at him. “But Ms. Bennett has lost so much blood. She could die if we

don’t get her to a hospital.”

“If an ambulance comes, the police will come too.”

Ethan turned to Lily. She had dropped the knife and curled up in the corner, trembling from

head to toe.

“I don’t know what happened.” She stared blankly at the blood on her hands. “Ethan, did I have another episode? I don’t remember anything. When I came to, the knife was already in my hand.”

She looked up, tears spilling one after another. “I didn’t mean to hurt Natalie. Please don’t call the police. I don’t want to go to prison.”

The anger in Ethan’s eyes instantly melted into concern. He stepped in front of her.

“Don’t be afraid. You’re sick. You didn’t mean any of this.”

The woman on the bed suddenly moved. With great effort, she reached toward the phone on

the nightstand.

Dad grabbed it first. “Natalie, don’t call the police yet.”

She clutched his sleeve and moaned in agony.

After two stab wounds and massive blood loss, she couldn’t form a complete sentence.

Assuming she was still reaching for the phone, Dad pried her fingers loose.

“Lily has a serious mental health condition. If the police get involved, her entire life will be ruined, Hold on a little longer. Dr. Morgan is on his way.

The woman struggled even harder. Afraid she might grab the phone, Ethan forced her back

onto the mattress.

Pressure on the wounds sent fresh blood gushing out.

The housekeeper went pale.

“Mr. Bennett, she looks like she’s dying. We need to take her to the hospital now!”

Dad cut him off. “I said we’re waiting for Dr. Morgan.

“No one is to speak about what happened tonight. Lock every door downstairs. No one leaves

without my permission.”

That was exactly how they had trapped me in my previous life. They had taken my phone and locked every exit.

I had pressed both hands to my wound and begged them to take me to the hospital.

Dad had said the Bennett name couldn’t survive a scandal.

Ethan had insisted Lily was having an episode and hadn’t meant it.

Mom had held my hand and urged me to wait just a little longer.

All of them had promised the family physician would arrive soon.

I waited forty minutes. The doctor never came in time. Death did.

Now the woman on the bed was struggling to breathe too. She used the last of her strength to grab Ethan, begging him for help without words.

But he recoiled from her bloodstained hand.

“Natalie, don’t make this harder for us. Lily is already terrified. Even if you won’t think about

yourself, think about this family.

“It was only two stab wounds. That doesn’t mean you’ll die.”

Relief washed over Lily’s face. She moved behind Ethan and timidly pinched the hem of his

shirt.

“Will Natalie hate me when she wakes up?”

“No.” Ethan turned to reassure her. “You’re her sister. She knows you can’t control yourself.”

Lily looked at Dad. “What about the wedding tomorrow?”

After a moment of grim silence, Dad answered, “We’ll say Natalie threw a fit and postpone it.”

No one asked the woman they believed was me whether she agreed. As far as they knew, I

might not even live to see morning, and they didn’t care.

They had already forgiven the person who stabbed me on my behalf. Now they were discussing

how to bury the truth

The housekeeper brought in a first-aid kit. Ethan pinned the wounded woman to the bed to keep her still.

Lily watched from the side as her panic gradually faded. Peering over Ethan’s shoulder, she

almost seemed to smile.

“Just hold on a little longer, Natalie. Once the physician arrives, it won’t hurt anymore.”

Then a voice came from the doorway.

“I don’t think she can hold on that long.”

Silence fell. Everyone turned at once.

I stood in the doorway and calmly looked at them.

Lily stared at me, every trace of color vanishing from her face.

“How are you here?”

I raised the phone that was still recording and walked into the room.

“Why wouldn’t I be?” I asked. “The woman in that bed isn’t me.”
