Watching me fall, Tyler and Dad first reacted with disbelief.

They scanned the edge again and again, but saw no sign of me. Only then did it hit them-I had fallen in just a blink.

“How did Monica fall? That’s a cliff down there. Do you think she could still be alive?” Cassie’s overly dramatic voice came from behind them.

For the first time, Tyler and Dad found her voice utterly irritating.

“Monica will be fine. Stop talking nonsense. I’m calling for help right now,” Tyler snapped.

“No, we have to go down now. She’s tough. She survived losing all that blood-a cliff won’t take her out,” Dad muttered, almost crazed. He tried to rush toward the door to find a path down the cliff, but the reson manager stopped him.

“Mr. Kent, Mr. Woods, please wait for professional rescuers. A fall from this cliff is so high. If Ms. Kent fell, it’s basically…”

Dad froze for a moment, then suddenly shook off the manager’s restraining hand. Dad roared, “What are you saying? My daughter isn’t dead. How dare you curse her.”

The manager’s voice was thick with fear. “I’m not cursing her, Mr. Kent. But from that height, if we’re facing the facts here, her chances of survival are very slim.

“And both you and Mr. Woods were right there. Why didn’t you pull her back inside?

“A single hand reaching out could have saved her. She would have been perfectly safe.”

Hearing the manager’s words, Dad completely broke down. “You’re right. Why couldn’t I hold onto Monica?”

“Don’t worry, I’ve already contacted the professional rescue team. They’ll be here soon. Perhaps… perhaps the heavens will watch over Ms. Kent. She’ll be alright.”

Tyler and Dad could no longer process any rational words, only clinging to empty comforts they told themselves.

“You’re right. The heavens will watch over Monica. If we search fast enough, she’ll definitely be okay.”

Behind them, Cassie saw her chance and quietly slipped away.

When the professional rescue team arrived, Dad and Tyler desperately wanted to climb down themselves, but were stopped.

After several hours, the team returned with a bloodstained, torn piece of clothing-the very one I had been wearing.

Dad’s hands trembled as he took it. “No. This can’t be. My Monica can’t be dead.

“You’re lying to me. She must be okay. She has to be.”

A dull roar filled his head. His blood ran cold.

How could she be gone?

She survived that massive hemorrhage. She was fine this morning. How could she be dead in an instant?

Monica loved memore than anything. How could she leave me?

Tyler snatched the rope from a rescuer and moved toward the cliff edge, his voice shaking. “I don’t believe it. There’s no way Monica’s dead. You didn’t look hard enough. She’s down there waiting for me. I have to get down there and find her.”

Tyler was like a man possessed and wouldn’t listen to anyone.

The rescue team tried to speak more, but just then, Cassie arrived.
