Jake called for the twenty-second time, and I answered.

Megan stared at my phone screen, eyes wide, and whispered, “You’re picking up?”

“Emma, why are you just answering now? Where are you?”

His voice was still soft and sweet.

No one would guess this was the same man who said I was cheaper than a nanny.

“I’m near the courthouse.”

He sounded relieved. “I knew you’d be on time. I’ll be there soon. See you at two.”

“Okay.”

“Emma, don’t be discouraged. Once I make real money…”

“Jake.” I cut him off. “Don’t be late.”

I hung up. Megan looked at me and asked, “You’re really going through with it?”

I let out a weak laugh. “What else can I do?”
