Married At 9AM, Divorced At 10AM Chapter 05

Married At 9AM, Divorced At 10AM Chapter 05

My hands were still shaking when I told Megan everything.

At some point, Jake must have woken up because he kept messaging me.

He sent a dozen texts telling me to hurry up for the divorce.

[Baby, where did you go?]

[We have an appointment. Don’t forget.]

Megan was furious. She took me by the arm and said, “Let’s go outside. There’s a cafe across the street.”

At the cafe entrance, I stopped.

I recognized his silhouette immediately.

This was the kind of place we never used to go to.

The courthouse was right across the street.

Jake had scheduled our divorce for two in the afternoon, so it made sense he would be here.

The two men laughing with him were strangers.

I used to feel sorry that he had no friends.

He always said delivery drivers kept to themselves and it was hard to

build real friendships.

Now I realized he probably never made a single delivery.

I was the only one working three jobs, paying off debt, and dreaming of a future.

I was about to walk in when one of his friends said loudly, “What was her expression when she found out you posted the license and then filed for divorce right after?”

Jake smiled casually. “What expression? She was confused. But she’s obedient. She didn’t even make a scene.”

Another friend jumped in. “That was a genius move. You give her little crumbs, make her think you’re broke but emotionally invested. She’ll do anything. So making her the side piece? That’s nothing.”

Jake didn’t deny it.

He put down his cup. “She was good to me, though.”

Someone else finished his thought. “Damn right she was, working three jobs to pay off your credit card debt. She never knew what you actually spent that money on.”

“One bag for Sophia cost more than everything she had paid off in years.”

“She even borrowed money for you to buy that gold bracelet just so you’d look good in front of her parents.”

“Then you gave it to Sophia because she liked it and swapped it for a

fake.”

“And she cried over it like it was the sweetest thing.”

Jake didn’t laugh. He just swirled his coffee.

“If the old man would accept Sophia, I never would have gone for someone with no connections like her. Three years for five thousand dollars? Cheaper than a nanny.”

“And if I insisted on Sophia, he’d find a way to make her life miserable. But Emma? No family, no background. There’s nothing he can do to threaten her.”

“Once I bring Sophia home and Dad approves her, I don’t have to pretend anymore.”

“You know I hate gold diggers. If I wasn’t afraid she’d go after my money, I wouldn’t have hidden it so hard.”

“I didn’t think she’d be this dumb, though. Paying me to let her be with me.”

Everyone at the table burst out laughing.

“Hey, if she marries someone else someday, you think you’ll miss her?”

He took a sip of coffee, the corner of his lips curling slightly. “That’s not happening.”

Someone whistled. “Oh wow, Jake’s got feelings? I knew three years—”

“Shut your mouth.” Jake cut him off. His voice wasn’t loud, but it was cold. “Don’t say a word about her in front of Sophia.”

Megan tried to storm inside, but I held her back.

I stood in the May sun, staring through the glass at the man laughing without a care.

The man I knew was a stranger to me.
