I was too stunned to speak.

Janice had actually started hurting innocent people…because of me?

“Go talk to her,” the old man said with a tired sigh. “Don’t let her keep going down this path. We can’t

enter that world ourselves. Only one interworld traveler can enter a given world.”

I nodded.

I didn’t want to see Janice again, but I couldn’t let her keep killing people because of me.

I followed the man to a rundown building.

Police had the place surrounded. A loudspeaker kept blaring from outside.

“Janice Frost, you’re surrounded! Put the weapon down and come out with your hands up. Cooperate, and

we’ll go easy on you.”

The old man led me straight through the perimeter and into the building.

The metallic smell of blood hit me immediately, so thick that it almost made me gag.

And then I saw Janice, standing in the middle of a room, soaked in blood. She stood there with her back

to me, completely still, like a statue.

On the floor, Tim lay barely breathing, his body drenched in blood and almost unrecognizable.

A few other men were scattered nearby, all of them hovering between life and death.

I took a breath and stepped forward.

“Janice…” I called out softly.

She spun around abruptly, her hollow eyes snapping into focus the moment she saw me.

“Samuel… You came back?”

I looked at her, a knot tightening in my chest.

The woman who once loved me more than anything stood before me now like a completely different

person.

“Janice, why are you doing this?”

Her expression twisted, something frantic rising to the surface. “I can’t lose you. I won’t.”

She reached out, trying to pull me into her arms, but her hands passed straight through me.

I gave a small, bitter smile and shook my head. “I’m already dead. Let it go. Let them go.

Her eyes filled with a desperate kind of madness. “Are you blaming me? For not saving you back then? I can fix it. I can kill Tim right now. I’ll avenge you!”

She turned sharply, staring at Tim with something savage in her gaze.

I stepped in, stopping her. “No more killing. The Janice I knew wouldn’t do this.”

She turned back slowly, the strength draining out of her. For a moment, she looked like a lost child.

“What am I supposed to do?” she asked, her voice breaking. “I can’t live without you. Not even a day.”

I should have felt something: pain, sympathy, anything.

And yet, there was nothing left.

“Janice, wake up. Even if you torture them all to death, I’m not coming back. Don’t pretend you’re doing this for me. If you really cared about me, you wouldn’t have hurt me in the first place.”

I looked at her, cold and steady. Everything I once felt for her was gone.

She staggered to her feet, panic flooding her face as she tried to explain.

“I didn’t! I never wanted to hurt you. I love you, Samuel.”

The moment the words left her mouth, her body jolted. She dropped to her knees, clutching her head,

shaking from the pain.

I knew what that was.

The backlash from breaking the rules she wasn’t supposed to break.

Which meant what she said was probably true.

However, that kind of love was twisted. It was selfish and cruel.

She lifted her head, eyes searching mine, desperate.

“Look at me… I’m in pain. That means I love you. I really do. I just want to be with you.”

She crawled toward me like someone clinging to the last thread keeping them alive.

I stepped back, shaking my head. “I don’t want to be with you. I won’t forgive you, not in this lifetime”

She froze, as if she couldn’t process it.

“Why? You weren’t like this before! You always gave in to me. Why won’t you give me another chance? I

only made one mistake!”

I looked at her. Now, there was nothing left inside me.

“There were so many ways to deal with Tim.”
