Lost My Love to His Best Friend Chapter 04

Lost My Love to His Best Friend Chapter 04

I walked out of the apartment gripping my last bags, only to crash straight into Kieran—he barreled over toward me, seething.

“Wren! If you hadn’t gotten Riley all riled up, she never would’ve left, and she wouldn’t have fallen!”

“Come with me to the hospital and apologize to her! Look what your attitude did to her.”

Before I could utter a word of refusal, Kieran manhandled me into his car and sped straight to the hospital.

We shoved open the hospital room door, and Kieran pressed hard on my shoulders to shove me forward, forcing me to stand in front of Riley and beg for forgiveness.

I hadn’t even parted my lips to say something.

SLAP.

A brutal slap cracked hard across my cheek, my ears ringing loud enough to drown out every other sound.

“You’re just jealous my girl’s having Kieran’s kid! You purposely tried to make her lose the baby—how could you be this shameless?!”

“Riley told me everything. You’ve wedged yourself between them this whole time, driving them apart.”

“My girl and Kieran are head over heels for each other. Homewreckers like you get everything you’ve got coming!”

Riley’s mom screamed right in my face, her nails nearly jabbing straight into my eyeballs.

Every onlooker stared at me with unmasked revulsion, and some random bystander pulled out their phone to start a live stream of the mess.

The sharp metallic taste of blood flooded my mouth, and I forced it down.

“Your daughter’s the actual homewrecker here—”

“Cut it out!”

Kieran barked over me sharply.

“You almost made Riley lose our baby, and now you’re lying and calling her the other woman?”

Lying?

A bitter laugh bubbled up out of my throat.

“So according to you, I’m the other woman?”

The room went dead silent, every pair of eyes snapping onto Kieran.

Riley tugged weakly at the hem of his shirt, her voice soft and whimpering.

“We’ve never crossed any lines. If we’re truly friends, don’t let everyone brand me a homewrecker.”

Kieran clamped his jaw tight. After a long beat, he settled on his choice.

“Wren, you’re the other woman.”

He shot me one final guilty glance, then twisted his head away, refusing to meet my eyes again.

His words stabbed straight through my chest, carving me up from the inside out like shards of broken glass.

I gasped for air, yet the agony still burned deep in my bones.

Someone in the crowd hurled a full bottle of water straight at me.

“Homewrecker playing the victim! Disgusting!”

“Get lost, we can’t stand people like you!”

Strangers shoved and jostled me roughly until I stumbled out of the hospital room utterly humiliated.

Kieran chased after me and grabbed my arm to stop me from leaving.

“Riley’s pregnant, she can’t handle heavy stress. I only said that to stop everyone mislabeling her as the other woman.”

“We’re gonna get our marriage license soon anyway, the truth’ll come out—”

“Kieran.”

I cut him off.

“I’m not marrying you.”

Panic flickered across Kieran’s face, and he opened his mouth to argue.

My phone buzzed, a notification popping up confirming our marriage license appointment had gone through successfully.

Kieran caught sight of the screen and loosened up right away, a smug, relieved grin tugging at his mouth.

“Wren, I knew it. You still wanna marry me, you’re just pulling the playing hard to get act for show.”

“Drop the drama. Go home and get the spare room set up for Riley, or don’t expect me to show up to get the license tomorrow.”

I pulled my lips into a cold, hollow smile, then turned and left.

It didn’t matter. The person I’d tie the knot with wouldn’t be him anyway.

The next day, Kieran brought Riley back to our apartment.

He froze the second he laid eyes on the empty living room.

A massive wave of pure panic washed over him all at once.

He rushed into the master bedroom, but there wasn’t a single trace of me anywhere.

Glancing to the side, he saw the vanity that had once been covered in my skincare products was completely bare. Even the closet stood empty.

He fumbled for his phone, his hands shaking uncontrollably.

The call rang and rang nonstop, but no answer.

Kieran was this close to breaking down when the call finally picked up.

He’d just drawn a breath to speak when a strange male voice crackled through the speaker.

“Hello?”

Kieran shot to his feet, raising his voice sharply.

“Who are you? Why do you have Wren’s phone?”

“I’m her husband. What do you want?”

Kieran figured the guy was just some prankster and prepared to snap back.

Then Riley wandered over, holding her phone out right in front of his face.

A full official marriage certificate lit up her phone screen.

“Kieran look! Wren actually got hitched! You’ve been sticking with me this whole time—who’d she tie the knot with?”
