Lost My Love to His Best Friend Chapter 05

Lost My Love to His Best Friend Chapter 05

The screen pulled up a social media post I’d uploaded not long before.

The second Kieran laid eyes on the photo, his eyes blew wide, utterly stunned.

CRASH.

His phone slammed hard against the floor.

He stumbled backward two paces and knocked over the table behind him.

Then his legs buckled, and he collapsed flat to the ground.

His mind flashed back to the hospital yesterday—me, eyes red-rimmed, telling him I’d never get a marriage license with him.

Back then, panic had washed over him instantly when he heard those words.

He’d rushed to apologize right away, until he spotted a notification pop up on my phone.

The notification plainly said I’d booked an appointment to get my official marriage license.

He instantly brushed it off as me just playing hard to get.

Riley would not stop going on about how all girls pulled that trick, that he couldn’t keep baby me nonstop.

We’d been together eight years, and I’d threatened to walk out on him.

countless times.

But I’d always stayed in the end.

He’d fully thought this fight would blow over just like every other one.

That’s why he’d calmed right back down.

He’d even told me to head home and fix up the guest room for Riley, his girl best friend.

Eight whole years of us, and he’d been dead set that I’d never leave him.

Who else was I gonna tie the knot with anyway?

It wasn’t until he stared at the marriage license on my feed that it hit him—this wasn’t just some petty tantrum.

I’d meant every word I said that day.

I’d really left him for good.

Riley knelt down and put a hand on Kieran’s shoulder.

“It’s just one girl, what’s the big fuss over?”

“She’s just messing with your head, probably paid some random dude to post a fake marriage pic just to get a rise out of you.”

“Hey, worst comes to worst I’ll drag you to the clerk’s office to grab our own license and shove it in her face. I’m your girl best friend, aren’t I?”

With that, she nudged his shoulder with hers.

Bright, triumphant excitement burned in her gaze.

She was already carrying his kid. If they locked down that marriage license, all she’d have to do later was pull the kid needs a stable household card, and Kieran would never leave her.

Her heart fluttered with glee at the thought of finally being public with him.

She was fully convinced he’d jump on her offer without a second thought.

He’d always valued their bond and listened to every word she said—if it weren’t for her meddling, we never would’ve fallen apart this badly.

All those years pretending to be nothing more than his girl best friend hadn’t been for nothing.

Sure enough, Kieran’s eyes lit up the second her words registered.

“You’re right. Wren’s just trying to make me jealous.”

Riley grinned and reached to haul him back to his feet.

“Let’s bounce, the clerk’s office hasn’t closed yet—we can still file today.”

Kieran suddenly jerked his arm hard, shaking her hand right off him.

Riley stumbled back, completely blindsided, pure shock written all over her face.

She lifted her gaze to meet his, only to be met with his cold, unforgiving stare.

“I’m only ever getting a marriage license with Wren. She’s my one and only wife. Who the hell do you think you are, thinking you could take her spot?”

“I messed up horribly. I swore to Wren I’d keep all women at a distance. Even if I only saw you as my girl best friend, you’re still a woman.”

“Wren hates it when I cross any messy lines with other women. I never should’ve blurred the line with you, never should’ve let you crash at our place. Get out of my house right now.”

Kieran’s mind raced.

If he cut all ties with Riley right now before things got worse, I would definitely forgive him.

Riley just gaped at him, totally stunned. She never imagined everything would implode this badly coming.

She clamped down hard on her lip, her eyes glistening with bitter resentment.

“Kieran, you told me you had feelings for me too. You said if Wren wasn’t in the picture, we’d be together.”

“I’ve spent all these years stuck in this fake girl best friend act, swallowing every unfair slight. Are you really gonna keep hurting me just for her?”

Riley pushed herself off the floor and stepped right up in his face.

“I’m pregnant with your baby too. Let’s go get our license and give our kid a proper home, okay?”

She grabbed his hand and pressed it flat against her stomach.

She clung to the faint hope their child would soften his heart and change his mind.

But Kieran pulled his hand away without a single flicker of warmth, his expression stone cold.

“I’m never marrying you. Wren’s the only person I’ve ever loved.”

“I never should’ve listened to you and gotten you pregnant. This is all your fault! If you hadn’t meddled, Wren never would’ve left me!”

“And you’ve got the nerve to bring up the baby now? I’m not claiming it. You’d better get rid of it, and don’t show your face around me again.”

Riley’s mouth twitched uncontrollably, her hand frozen mid-air over her belly.

“You’re blaming me? Did I force you to sleep with me? This is our baby—how can you tell me to abort it?”

Her voice shrilled, thick with total disbelief.

She’d lost her mind completely, crazy aura pouring out of her.

Watching her spiral like this, a heavy wave of revulsion crashed over Kieran.

He couldn’t believe he’d once thought she was genuine, no hidden tricks or schemes.

He paid no mind to all her flailing kicks and shoves, hauling her roughly and tossing her right out the front door.

He tossed all her luggage out onto the porch right after her.

Her broken, shrill wails blared from outside.

Kieran acted like he couldn’t hear a thing, sinking back down onto the empty floor.

He stared at the empty silent house, buried under overwhelming regret.
