His eyes turned red right away, acting as if I had wronged him terribly.

“I know I messed up, Olivia. I haven’t slept a single peaceful night in four years. All I see when I close my eyes is the look on your face when you left me.”

He bowed his head, his posture utterly humble.

“I was arrogant and foolish. I thought you would never leave me, so I kept making mistakes and staying with Sophia.”

He let out a bitter laugh, his shoulders hunched like an elderly man worn down by life.

“But I love you. Only you. I clung to Sophia because I was scared of how deeply I loved you. I tried to pull away from those feelings. But I’ve learned my lesson now. Olivia, please leave him and come back to me. I’m begging you.”

I listened to every word he said. All I felt was ridicule and disgust.

“Love? You claim to love me, yet you hurt me time and time again. You started lying to me and ruining my life the day you changed my college application. The only person you’ve ever loved is yourself. Don’t use the word love to justify your actions. It’s an insult to what real love means.”

Ethan shook his head desperately.

“That’s not true, Olivia. I really—”

A shrill scream cut him off before he could finish his sentence.

“Ethan! How dare you chase after another woman!”

I turned around and came face to face with Sophia. We both froze in surprise.

She stared at me in shock.

“Olivia… It’s you.”

I looked her over from head to toe. Her hair was dull and dry, her face gaunt and haggard. I barely recognized her.

I remembered how elegant she had looked even in her fifties at the funeral in my past life. Ethan had spoiled her like a wealthy socialite for years in this life too. How had she fallen so far in just four years?

My curious stare hit a raw nerve. Sophia’s pride crumbled instantly.

“What are you staring at? Do you think you’re better than me now? Let me tell you—I have Ethan’s child! We’ll always be tied together, no matter what!”

Ethan’s face turned cold with contempt.

“Sophia, I’ve never recognized that brat as my child.”

Hurt flashed across Sophia’s face, and tears flooded her eyes.

“Brat? That’s your own flesh and blood! How can you be so cruel, Ethan?”

I grew tired of their endless drama. The same scene had played out four years ago, and here it was again.

“Are you two done?”

They both turned to look at me.

“Your messy love affairs have nothing to do with me. Neither of you are good people. Stay away from me.”

Panic flitted across Ethan’s face.

“Olivia, believe me. I’m done with Sophia for good.”

I pulled away from him, sickened by the whole situation.

Sophia watched Ethan grovel before me, consumed by jealousy and resentment after four years of cold treatment from him. The fact that her child would never be acknowledged pushed her over the edge completely.

Her eyes blazed with rage. She pulled a knife out of nowhere and charged straight at me.

“You ruined my life! DIE!”

I froze in shock.

Pain never came.

Ethan had thrown himself in front of me. The blade sank deep into his abdomen. I stared in complete shock.

“Olivia…” Ethan’s voice was weak.

“Olivia!” Marcks shouted in alarm.

Marcks rushed forward, pulled me safely behind him, then kicked Sophia to the ground. He pulled out his phone and called the police.

“Are you alright?” He asked me quickly.

I shook my head.

“Call 911.”

Police officers arrived moments later and took Sophia into custody.

Paramedics loaded Ethan onto an ambulance. He reached out and grabbed my hand tightly, refusing to let go.

“Olivia. Don’t leave me.”

I pried his fingers off mine one by one.

“We’re even now. I don’t care if you live or die.”

I turned and walked away, hand in hand with Marcks.

I never looked back.

Not even once.
