IT’S MY PRIVATE TIME, CALL 911- My Husband Blunted My 99 SOS Calls as an On-the-Job Injury Chapter 05

The company retreat ended, and Jared returned home with Cecilia.

He paused to change his shoes in the entryway, a strange unease settling over him. He couldn’t quite place the feeling, yet the house felt emptier than usual. Frowning, he brushed the thought aside.

The next day at work, errors turned up in several documents. He went to find Rachel for clarification, only to stop short at her workstation. The desk was completely bare, not even her usual mug in sight.

He turned to a nearby employee. “Where’s Miss Wright?”

The staff member looked startled. “Mr. Howard, she left her two weeks’ notice on your desk. You already approved it.”

“Everyone figures she didn’t want to switch to administrative work after what you said on the cruise, so she quit. You agreed to it, after all.”

Jared’s mind went blank. “Resignation? I knew nothing about this.”

Nervously, an HR staffer handed him the envelope. Jared tore it open, and his fingers froze.

Inside lay a resignation letter, along with paperwork for an abortion dated just days prior. The form noted no family member had accompanied her, and recommended a two-week rest period after the procedure.

When had she gotten pregnant? And when had she terminated the pregnancy? How could he have known absolutely nothing?

A sharp headache throbbed behind his eyes. He turned to his assistant. “Find out where she went.”

Another employee muttered under their breath. “I don’t think she wants to be contacted, sir.”

Jared stood rooted to the spot. He had never told anyone at the office that Rachel was his wife. To everyone but Cecilia, she was just a senior employee who had worked there for six years. Deep down, he had treated her as nothing more too.

A dull ache settled in his chest.

Jared busied himself with work all day. When he stepped through the front door that night, the silence in the house was deafening.

A noise came from the doorway. He snapped his head up. “Rachel?”

The door swung open, and Cecilia stood there instead.

“Oh. It’s you.” he blurted out.

Cecilia pouted, looking hurt. “You didn’t wait for me on the way home today. I took a taxi, and the traffic was terrible.”

She reached for his arm, acting playful and clingy as she always did. In the past, he would have comforted her at once, but he had no mood for it now.

Noticing his cold demeanor, she shook his arm lightly. “I closed a huge deal today! You owe me a gift.”

“I’m not in the mood. Treat yourself.” Jared pulled his arm free and pulled a black card from his wallet and handed it over.

Cecilia’s face lit up, and she left cheerfully. Jared stared after her, the sight stinging his eyes.

Over the past six years, whenever he had thought about buying Rachel something, she had always turned him down politely. Come to think of it, he had never given her a single gift. Not once.

Late into the night, he tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep. The bedroom door creaked open, and a shadow slipped inside, moving silently toward the bed.

In the darkness, a pair of hands slid around his waist from behind.

Jared jolted upright. “What the—?!”
