IT’S MY PRIVATE TIME, CALL 911- My Husband Blunted My 99 SOS Calls as an On-the-Job Injury Chapter 03

Cecilia lay pale in the hospital ward. The doctor confirmed she had food poisoning.

She slowly opened her eyes, tears welling up. “Miss Wright… why would you do this? I would never try to steal Jared from you…”

“I saw you standing on the stairs during the thunderstorm. Do you hate me that much?” She grabbed my sleeve, tears streaming down her face. “I’m just an orphan with no one to rely on. I’d never dare go after your husband. Please forgive me, Miss Wright.”

Jared’s face darkened as he watched the scene.

My gaze drifted to a bouquet of red roses beside her bed—vivid and harsh to look at.

A sharp pain twisted my chest. So Jared wasn’t allergic to flowers at all. He just hated the flowers I brought.

“The groceries for our meals are your responsibility,” Jared said flatly.

His words were not a question, but an accusation. He stared at me coldly. “You’ve always been so reasonable. How could you do something this reckless?”

Cecilia tugged at the hem of his shirt. “Jared, Miss Wright must have just lost her temper. It’s my fault. The thunder brought back bad memories of being bullied, and I lost control. Please don’t blame her. Blame me instead.”

Jared stepped in front of Cecilia, shielding her from me. The whole situation struck me as utterly absurd.

I looked at Cecilia’s tearful, innocent expression and spoke calmly. “Stop acting like the victim. I’m getting a divorce from Jared. You’ll have him soon enough.”

Slap.

A hard slap landed across my cheek. Jared kept his hand raised, shouting in rage. “Rachel Wright! You’ve gone too far! Get out of here!”

I turned my head slowly. My cheek was numb, and so was my heart. I stared into his eyes, which held nothing but anger and disgust. “Fine. I’m leaving.”

I walked out of the hospital into a torrential downpour. I opened my umbrella, but muddy splatters still stained the hem of my dress.

Back home, I took the dress off and threw it in the trash. It was the dress I’d worn the day Jared and I got our marriage license.

I didn’t know why I’d put it on today. Deep down, I must have remembered — today marked our sixth wedding anniversary.

Jared had never remembered a single anniversary in all these six years.

Our marriage had started as a business arrangement. Then my family’s company collapsed, and my parents died in an accident. Meanwhile, the Howard family grew increasingly powerful.

Jared’s mother had liked me and insisted we marry. But Jared had resented having his life controlled for him, and he’d never treated me well.

That all changed when Cecilia showed up. For the first time, I saw him laugh, worry and care for someone.

I’d argued, cried and broken down countless times. But he’d always looked at me like I was an unreasonable nuisance. “Do your job and give me an heir. Stop acting so hysterical.”

“Cecilia just reminds me of my late sister. I look out for her a little, that’s all. Don’t overthink it.”

His excuse about Cecilia resembling his sister had silenced me.

Three years ago, I’d gone through that difficult labor and nearly died from blood loss. The hospital had called Jared dozens of times. His only reply was a text: [Miss Wright, I’m out shopping with Cecilia. Weekends are my personal time. If it’s an emergency, call 911. Otherwise, file it as a work comp claim.]

Our baby never got to live.

One painful memory after another cut deep into my heart. This marriage had been over long ago.

After Cecilia was discharged, Jared grew even colder toward me. He took her on a trip for several days before coming home.

My final day at work fell on the company’s year-end team retreat, held aboard a luxury cruise ship.

Jared and Cecilia were the center of attention, dressed to the nines and clinking champagne flutes, while I stayed in the shadows.
