My best friend Tessa Vaughn walked in and stopped dead at the sight of handbags and jewelry

covering the floor.

“Maren, are you moving?”

I shook my head and kept taping boxes shut.

“I’m getting divorced.”

Tessa froze.

“Wait, you’re the one ending it?”

No.

That made even less sense to her.

“The Sterlings were against the marriage, but Graham gave up his inheritance to be with you.”

“His grandfather froze his accounts. Graham worked so hard he ended up in the hospital with a bleeding ulcer, just so he could still buy you things. And he still wouldn’t let you go.”

“That man was crazy about you. Why would he want a divorce?”

My throat closed up.

I used to believe that too.

But I wasn’t the one he fought for.

That was Sloane, the girl who’d been using my photos the whole time she was talking to him.

The comments continued.

[Graham really was madly in love, but the person he loved was Sloane.]

I looked down.

“He thought I was someone else.”

“He never liked me. Not from the start.”

“Maren, are you sure you’re not reading this wrong?”

My hands clenched around the box. I shook my head.

Tessa took one look at my face and let it go.

She pulled me into a hug and switched gears.

“Fine. Then screw him. Divorce his ass.”

“You’re gorgeous. You’ve always had guys lining up.”

“After the divorce, I’m hiring, like, ten hot guys for you. Young ones, smooth talkers, six-packs for days. They can take shifts.”

She stopped mid-sentence.

I looked up.

Graham was standing in the doorway.

His eyes moved over the boxes. The gifts. All of it on the floor.

Then he looked at me, wearing a look I’d never seen before.

“So when exactly were we getting divorced, and why am I the last to know?”
