I Was Planning Our Wedding When He Told Me He Had a Wife Chapter 11

“Doctor, we understand. We’ll be careful.” Jason’s voice was hoarse. “Can we see her now?”

“Brief visits are okay. But keep things calm. Say things that reassure her.”

Entering the transitional room next to the ICU, Jason immediately saw Evelyn on the bed, her face pale as paper, connected to various monitors. Tears fell without warning. He walked to the bedside, gently taking her hand.

Her long eyelashes fluttered a few times, slowly opening. Jason saw an expression he’d thought he’d never see again, eyes holding a weak gentleness, and the dependence of seeing someone close.

“…Jason?” Her voice was faint, with a trace of confusion. “Why… are you crying?” She tried to lift her hand to touch his face, but lacked the strength.

Jason’s tears flowed harder. He hastily wiped them, forcing a smile. “It’s nothing… I’m okay. Evelyn, how do you feel? Does it hurt?”

Evelyn slightly shook her head, her gaze lingering on his face, her brows gently furrowing. “You look awful… Is work too busy? Don’t push yourself.” She paused, as if remembering something, a glimmer flashing in her eyes.

“By the way… how did the final wedding proofs turn out? And the venue, did you finally decide on the garden or the beach?”

“Mom called me a few days ago asking. She’s even more impatient than I am…” She spoke, the corners of her lips curving into a tiny arc.

Utterly unaware of why she was in a hospital, or of the mother she’d just lost.

Jason’s heart hurt so much he could barely breathe. He buried his face in her cold hand. Guilt threatened to tear him apart.

“What’s wrong?” Evelyn’s voice held a touch of concern. “Did… something happen?”

Jason jerked his head up, shook it hard, forcing out a smile. “No! Nothing happened. The photos are beautiful, the venue’s set. Everything’s fine. You… you just had a little fall and ended up in the hospital. Soon, very soon, I’ll take you home, okay?”

Evelyn let out a sigh of relief. “Okay then… you scared me! But how could I be so clumsy? I want to go home soon. I miss Mom…”

The uncle stood at the doorway, watching. Even this tough man couldn’t stop his eyes from reddening again.

He turned away, roughly wiped his face, his voice hoarse as he said to Jason, “…Take care of her. Don’t let her… suffer any more stimulation.”

A few days later, Evelyn was stable enough for a regular room. After further observation, she was finally discharged. Jason cleared his schedule and personally picked her up.

The car entered the garage of the new home they’d bought for their marriage. Jason carefully carried Evelyn out. A flicker of confusion crossed her face. “But… we’re not married yet? How come… we’re moving into the new house?”

Holding her gently in his arms, a belated realization struck his heart hard.

So this was it. Setting aside all the deception, the secrets, the responsibility and calculations, just this, holding the one you love, living in a home that belongs to both of you, with eyes and heart only for each other, planning a future involving only the two of you…

It was such a heart-trembling, yet solidly satisfying feeling! Love was inherently selfish. Exclusive.

He’d used “responsibility” to excuse himself before, but deep down, had he ever truly been willing to share even a sliver of Evelyn’s love and attention with someone else?

This dependence he’d regained, this something once lost and now recovered, let him indulge. It also let that hidden sense of relief within him grow wildly.

Until Chloe suddenly showed up at their door.
