I Walked Away From His Regret Chapter 06

I Walked Away From His Regret Chapter 06

I got off work an hour late.

I deliberately took two extra blocks on my way home, so it was already quite late when I got there.

Edward might have gotten tired of waiting and eaten dinner alone.

When I pushed the door open, I saw a bouquet of roses on the dining table, with two candles standing right

beside it.

The dishes were arranged neatly.

Edward was sitting at the table waiting. When he heard the noise, he looked up.

I stood in the hallway and asked, “Why didn’t you eat first?”

He stared at me for a while before he spoke, “Sheryl, did you forget what today is?”

I froze.

Seeing the look on my face, his jaw tensed slightly.

“Today is the day we decided to get married.”

I was stunned.

I still remembered that day I held up a ridiculous soda can ring and proposed to him, and he said proposing

was supposed to be his job.

After thinking for a second, I said, “Then every year on this day, you can propose to me again.”

This was our second year.

I fell silent. I remembered that I’d already deleted all the notes about this date from my phone calendar when

he was still in Europe.

That was why I got no reminder and completely forgot.

Edward said, “It’s okay if you forgot. I’ll have the nanny reheat the food.”

He stood up as he spoke and went to grab the decanter.

I walked over and stopped him. “Don’t bother.”

He stopped moving and looked down at me.

“Edward… don’t bother.”

The knuckles he wrapped around the decanter turned stiff.

“What’s going on?”

I looked up at him.

I said slowly and softly.

“Edward, let’s get divorced.”

Edward went silent for a long time.

He gripped the decanter, then slowly released his hold and set it down.

“What I said outside the restaurant last time was just angry words.”

There he went saying that again.

“But what I’m saying isn’t angry words.” I looked helplessly into his eyes and said every word clearly, “Edward,

I mean it.

“You once said we can’t throw the word ‘breakup’ around lightly. We’ve been together for so long, and I’ve

never brought up splitting up except that one time.”

I paused.

“So this time, I’m serious.”

He looked stunned, “Why?”

“Is it because of Queenie? Nothing ever happened between me and her. I swear, I only see her as a friend.

“If… if you still can’t accept it, just tell me what you want me to do.”

His voice dropped, “Don’t joke about divorce.”

I stayed quiet for a second, “I’m really not joking.

“I already found a lawyer. Are you free tomorrow? I’ll have my lawyer go to your company.”

He took a deep breath, his chest rising with the motion, “I’m not free.”

“Then tell me when you are free, and I’ll schedule it in advance.”

Anger flashed across his face.

“Edward… don’t bother.”

Anger flashed across his face.

“What the hell is this about?” he said. “Is it Queenie, or is it that… baby.”

I didn’t want to talk about that baby.

His eyes turned red.

“I honestly had no idea you were pregnant.” His voice was tight. “If I’d known earlier, I never would’ve left your alone out there in the snow. I never would’ve dumped you alone outside the restaurant.

“Sheryl… I really regret it.”

Welling tears blurred my eyes as I hung my head. I calmed myself for a moment and said, “If it weren’t for

this baby, would you even regret it?”

He froze, “That’s not true.”

He reached out to grab my wrist as he spoke.

I dodged.

“I don’t want to keep comparing myself to another person. I don’t want to live in constant fear. I don’t want to

keep loving someone who doesn’t love me back the same way.

“I’m not that forgiving, and I’m not that saintly.”

He spoke in a low, urgent voice, “But I love you!

“I love you so much… I only love you.

“It’s already over between me and Queenie.”

I shook my head, “Your love is biased.

“You love me, but you still can’t let go of Queenie. But what I want is whole, pure love-love that always puts

me first.”

He opened his mouth to say more.

I cut him off.

“When are you free? Let our divorce lawyers meet up,”
