I Saw The Comments And Chose My Dad Over The Doctor I Loved Chapter 03

Once my dad finished collecting his medication, the hospital director told him to take a couple of days off to rest.

Only then did I finally start to calm down. I also managed to find out the young nurse’s name from some of the other nurses.

Elowen Clarke. It was a beautiful name, one that instantly sounded like a main character.

“That girl is something else. Word is she was a top graduate, and she’s so hardworking. The hospital director put her at the top of the list to stay on full-time at the hospital.”

“Plus, she’s really close with Waylon, the intern working under Dr. Stanfield. I see Waylon dropping her off for work all the time.”

“I asked her once if Waylon was her boyfriend, but she just said he was like an older brother she grew up with. Yeah, right. Nobody smiles that sweetly when they’re talking about a brother.”

“And when things get crazy busy and Elowen doesn’t have time to eat, Waylon will wait outside the dispensary with a sandwich. He refuses to go back to his rounds until he watches her finish every bite, saying he’s worried her blood sugar will drop.”

Pieces of Waylon and Elowen’s story kept drifting into my ears.

I kept my head down, picking at my nails. It turned out that whenever Waylon used to mysteriously disappear, it was because he had gone to take care of Elowen.

I worked as a school teacher, so my schedule became wide open during summer and winter breaks. To see Waylon more often, I used to tag along with my dad to the hospital in the mornings.

But Waylon, who was usually so diligent, was always the last one to arrive at the outpatient clinic. I had asked him why once.

That was the first time he had ever let his exhaustion show in front of me. “Alessia, I need a little privacy sometimes. Can you please stop asking?”

I had shut my mouth instantly. My chest felt like a balloon expanding with suffocating bitterness, and I had scrambled to find another topic.

“Have you had breakfast? I can bring you breakfast every day this summer…”

“No need. I already had.”

That was also the first time he had ever rejected me. I had nodded awkwardly, bolted out the door, and left.

Only now did I realize he was intentionally shielding Elowen, keeping her out of sight from Blakely and me so that our petty jealousy wouldn’t touch her.

The more I thought about it, the more miserable I felt. I wiped away a stray tear just as my dad finished handing over his shift for the day.

He called out to me to go home, and I quickly got up to follow him to the car.

On the way back, my phone vibrated.

I looked down at the screen, and my entire body locked up.

It was a text from Waylon.

[Alessia, what was it that you didn’t finish saying earlier?]

The sudden confrontation left my brain in a chaotic mess. My thumb hovered over the screen, typing out characters only to delete them over and over again.

Before I could figure out how to reply, another message from Waylon popped up: [You were the one who told me that you never know how things will turn out unless you try, right?]

My heart hammered wildly against my ribs, only to cool completely flat the next second as the comments began to roll in.

[The ML made plans to go to a movie with the FL tonight. It’s one of those must-watch movies for couples.]

[We really have to thank the extra for giving the ML a wake-up call. With his passive personality, those two would have kept missing each other for years otherwise.]

[The extra has served her purpose. She doesn’t need to show up anymore.]

I stared at my hands, feeling as though my entire existence was fading into the background because of those words.

I couldn’t help but let out a bitter laugh. I shut off my phone and didn’t reply. Waylon didn’t send anything else either.

Once we got home, my dad and I kept the medical scare a secret from my mom. We ate dinner like normal, and then I crawled into bed, utterly exhausted.

The sky outside gradually darkened. My body was spent, but my mind remained agonizingly sharp.

Staring blankly at the ceiling, surrounded by the cheering comments, I couldn’t stop my mind from picturing Waylon and Elowen together.

The moment I imagined him cupping Elowen’s face to kiss her with total devotion, I broke down and started crying again, completely hating myself for it.

The clock ticked closer to the exact time Waylon was supposed to confess his feelings to Elowen. Suddenly, the comments that had been scrolling past at a frantic pace went dead silent, leaving only a few words on display.

[Wait, this is wrong! Why is the plot completely messed up?]

The next second, my phone rang. I picked up the call, and Waylon’s heavy breathing echoed through the receiver.

“Alessia, get downstairs.”
