I Saw The Comments And Chose My Dad Over The Doctor I Loved Chapter 02

I Saw The Comments And Chose My Dad Over The Doctor I Loved Chapter 02

The farce came to an abrupt end before it could even properly begin.

My dad couldn’t stand his ground against me, and I finally badgered him into having the angiogram.

Waiting outside the doors, images of my dad in a critical state and Waylon’s impatient frown flashed through my mind, intertwining until I could barely breathe from crying so hard.

I clasped my hands together, my entire body trembling uncontrollably.

“Alessia, are you okay?”

A tissue appeared in front of me.

Sobbing, I looked up to see a gentle-looking Waylon.

I hadn’t expected him to follow me downstairs. The tiny spark of disappointment I felt back in his office suddenly threatened to flare back up from the ashes, and I squeezed my hands tighter, unable to stop myself from wondering.

We had known each other for a year. Maybe… just maybe, he actually had feelings for me.

Seeing me freeze up, Waylon gently used the tissue to wipe the tears from my face, offering a comforting word. “Don’t worry. The hospital just had a group checkup a month ago. Except for a few borderline baseline numbers, Dr. Stanfield is very healthy. He’s going to be fine.”

He still spoke with that same tenderness, the same tenderness he had shown me every single day for over three hundred days.

Whenever I brought him homemade soup, he would smile and finish every drop, praising my cooking skills.

“Alessia, you’re getting really good at this. Thanks for treating me to such a wonderful meal today.”

My face flushed, and I asked him for his on-call schedule.

Waylon never held back, freely sharing it and even beating me to the punch.

“I’m on call Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but my weekend nights are free. Didn’t you want to check out that night market? We can go together this Saturday night.”

My face would burn even hotter then. Meeting Waylon’s intense gaze, I could only nod like an idiot, stammer out a clumsy promise to be there, and rush out of the office to find a corner to cool down my flaming cheeks.

Sometimes when my dad worked late shifts, my mom would have me drop off late-night snacks, and if Waylon happened to be heading home after working overtime, he would offer to give me a ride.

“It’s not safe for you to go back alone, Alessia,” he said. “Let me drive you home.”

When the flu season peaked, he would warn me to avoid crowded places, and whenever I woke up early to eat a proper breakfast, he would call me a good girl.

It was these tiny moments of tenderness that had won my heart, making me believe that Waylon was the only one for me in this lifetime.

Even though the comments were still calling me delusional, I couldn’t resist gambling on that one-in-a-million chance.

I grabbed Waylon’s hand just as he was about to pull it back, stammering out my words. “Waylon, actually, back in the office, those flowers…”

Waylon looked down at me softly, his gaze familiar, mimicking the exact encouragement my dad had given me earlier.

My courage swelled under his watchful eyes. Finally, I closed my eyes, balled my hands into fists, and prepared to shout those three words.

The door to the radiology room suddenly swung open.

“Dr. Stanfield’s results are out.”

A doctor stepped out holding the report, his expression deadly serious.

“We found a tiny blood clot in his vessels, and it was moving right toward his cerebral artery. It’s a good thing Alessia forced Dr. Stanfield to get checked. If it had caused a blockage, the consequences would have been unthinkable.”

“Now, he just needs to take preventative medication regularly, and he’ll be fine.”

The words I wanted to say died in my throat. My head spun with dizziness. I rushed forward rigidly to take hold of my dad, who was being supported by a young nurse, crying and laughing all at once.

“Dad, that’s great, you’re fine, oh my god.”

Tears shimmered in my dad’s eyes as he squeezed my hand tightly.

I turned around to thank the doctor, but out of the corner of my eye, I saw Waylon, who had rushed over to my dad with me, leaning down to talk to the young nurse.

“You were on duty last night,” he said. “Why are you still working today?”

The young nurse tilted her head up slightly, revealing two cute canines when she smiled. “I wasn’t supposed to come in today. I just had to work an extra shift for Dr. Stanfield.”

The usual gentle expression Waylon used with me was completely gone, replaced by a frown that carried a hint of genuine anger.

“Don’t go binge-watching shows when you get back. Get some proper sleep. The head nurse told me the ER was packed last night, so you probably didn’t sleep at all. I’ll bring you your favorite pasta for dinner.”

His tone was almost harsh, but he looked so alive—so alive that all the gentleness and patience he had ever shown me felt like nothing more than a calculated mask.

[Lmao, this extra really thought Waylon rushed down here just to comfort her. In reality, the FL was working overtime downstairs, and the ML came down to force her to rest because he was worried she’d get too tired.]

[This extra just won’t quit. She just failed at confessing her feelings, and now she’s actually trying for another round.]

[I don’t even know what to say. She’s only known the ML for a year, so how could she possibly compete with the childhood-sweetheart bond between him and the FL? The ML only went to medical school because he knew the FL was studying nursing.]

[It’s hilarious watching this extra make a fool of herself. Just get lost already with your short-lived dad. I can tolerate you for two more chapters at most.]

Childhood sweethearts. Making a fool of myself.

I never knew those words could carry such a crushing weight.

Before Waylon could turn around to look at me, I wretchedly averted my eyes, supporting my dad as we walked home through my tears.

I kept telling myself over and over that at least my dad wouldn’t end up bedridden as a vegetable this time.

So what if I was nothing more than an extra? So what if I had only two more chapters left in Waylon’s world?

That was more than enough.
