She saw my eyes, already dull and lightless.

They could feel it-my scent had already disappeared.

The guest room was so quiet only the faint hum of the light fixture remained.

I lay on the floor, eyes staring emptily at the ceiling. From the living room, cheerful holiday music still played, absurdly out of place.

Adrian was the first to step back. His shoe landed in the silver-black liquid, and his body lurched.

“Nora?” His voice finally cracked with panic.

“Stop acting. This is another prop you prepared, isn’t it?”

I didn’t respond.

My mother rushed over and grabbed my collar, hauling me up.

“Enough! If I don’t snap you out of this today, I’ll-”

Her words died in her throat. My head lolled limply to the side. My skin was cold. No trace of living warmth left.

My mother’s hands jerked back.

“Nora?” When she said my name, her voice was already breaking.

Mason stood in the doorway, still holding the cake server.

“Is she… in shock?”

Ivy’s phone hung frozen in midair. The livestream comments were scrolling wildly.

This was a world where humans and werewolves coexisted, so some viewers could recognize the marks on my body.

Adrian finally lunged forward, dropping to his knees to feel for my breath.

All the color drained from his face.

“Nora, wake up.”

“I won’t cancel the ceremony. Take the ring back. Look at me.”

He tried to force the ring onto my stiff finger, but it wouldn’t go on.

My mother suddenly rushed into the bathroom and tore open the first-aid kit under the sink.

The empty bottle lay there quietly.

On its surface was a silver warning label from the wolf Healers.

My mother’s legs gave out. She collapsed to the floor.

“She really took it…”

“She really thought we were going to die, so she drank the whole bottle!”

“The awakening drug burned through her life force.”

“Her white wolf was already badly damaged. She never could have survived a full dose.”

Adrian grabbed his arm.

“Save her. I’m Alpha. I can give her my strength.”

The Healer looked at him.

“It’s too late.”

“After she took the drug, there was still a window to save her. If someone had noticed something was wrong, there might have been a chance.”

“Now, she and her wolf are both gone.”
