I Rented My Husband Out and Bought My Daughter A Heart Surgery Chapter 04

I looked past them into the operating room.

Bria’s chest was already open, the monitor beside her barely registering a pulse.

The doctor pulled free from my grip.

“Mr. Vance’s son had a sudden allergic reaction. We’ve been called in to assist, so the surgery has to be paused.”

“No. You’re not leaving.”

My voice cracked as I pulled out my debit card, my hands shaking.

“How much did he pay you? I’ll double it. Finish my daughter’s surgery.”

Afraid it wasn’t enough, I grabbed my phone, ready to transfer the money on the spot.

That was when I finally saw the note on the deposit—payment for pulling the medical team.

My vision went dark.

“Ma’am… this isn’t about money.”

The doctor avoided my eyes. “We can’t risk our jobs.”

I begged. I pleaded.

But they pried my fingers off, one by one, and walked away.

Bria lay alone on the operating table, her chest still open.

Thirty more minutes—that was all she needed.

Now she was left there because of her own father, waiting to die.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Coraline.

The photo showed Dexter lying in a hospital bed with a faint rash on his arm.

The room around him was packed with doctors.

Alistair sat beside him, feeding him strawberry shortcake.

Coraline’s message followed.

[Maren, weren’t you the one pretending to be above it all? Money over everything?]

[How does it feel, watching your daughter die right in front of you?]

[If you hadn’t remarried him, I might’ve even given you some money—for good karma.]

[But you had to push it. For that title. That pathetic status.]

[And now your daughter’s paying the price.]

My grip tightened around the phone until it hurt.

Time kept slipping away.

When the anesthesia wore off, she wouldn’t just die—she would feel everything.

I called Alistair again and again.

Every call went unanswered.

The line on the monitor grew weaker with each passing second.

I turned on my camera and dropped to my knees.

“Coraline, I’ll give him to you. Please… just send the doctors back.”

“I’ll return every cent he transferred to me.”

“Once her surgery is done, I’ll disappear. You’ll never see us again.”

I sent the video.

The call came immediately.

The moment I picked up, Alistair’s voice exploded through the line.

“Maren, I only reassigned two assistants. What are you playing at?”

“You’re really using your own daughter to frame Coraline now?”

In the background, Coraline sniffled softly.

“Alistair… it’s my fault. Dexter had that reaction right in the middle of Bria’s surgery, so they called you away. That’s why you couldn’t stay with her.”

There was a brief silence before realization set in.

“Oh, I get it now. You’re putting on this whole show because I didn’t pay you enough, right?”

“Maybe you should stop pretending to be my wife and just be what you really are.”

“A woman who sells everything.”

The line went dead.

My phone lit up again.

This time, it was the news.

Headlines flooded the screen.

#Wife Obsessed with Money—Husband, Family Plot, Even Daughter’s Life Up for Sale.

#Mother Halts Child’s Open-Heart Surgery to Stage Video Scam.

My hands shook as I dialed 911, trying to get help from another hospital.

But the ambulance couldn’t get through—the media had already blocked the entrance.

Cameras crowded the building, lights flashing, voices shouting.

I grabbed a scalpel.

My hand trembled at first.

Then I started swinging it wildly, forcing people back.

I didn’t care how I looked anymore. I just needed a way to keep her alive.

Elsewhere, Alistair sat frozen, staring at the news.

Something in his chest tightened.

“Bria’s still in surgery…”

“Did I go too far?”

He looked over at Dexter, laughing, perfectly fine, still eating cake.

Alistair stood up.

“I’m going back.”

When he reached the operating floor, he stopped.

Everything inside the room was overturned.
