“Better than learning that lesson the hard way after a divorce. Like I did.”

He choked on his words.

His phone rang again.

Dexter’s voice burst through the speaker. “Alistair, hurry up! You promised to ride the Titan Drop Coaster with me a hundred times!”

Bria’s fingers tightened around my sleeve.

Noticing it, Alistair hesitated for once.

He reached out, trying to pat her head.

“Be good, Bria. Go to the hospital with your mom today.”

“When you’re better, I’ll take you to the park. Deal?”

She leaned away, blinking up at him.

“It’s okay, Dad. Just send the money.”

His face darkened completely.

Before leaving, he threw out, “You and your daughter can keep acting like this. This is insane. You’re both impossible.”

The door slammed hard behind him.

My chest jolted with it.

Bria tugged at my arm and held up her smartwatch.

“Mom, Dad added a lot of zeros.”

“Is it enough for my surgery?”

I swallowed hard, pulling her into my arms.

“It’s enough. Once your surgery’s done, we’re leaving this place.”

While waiting for her tests, notifications popped up on my phone.

I hung up before he could respond.

Bria’s report came back. The doctor said she was stable and could be scheduled for bypass surgery next month.

My legs nearly gave out beneath me.

When Coraline divorced, Alistair had hired top lawyers—just to teach me a lesson.

I walked away with nothing.
