I Planned to Announce My Pregnancy, Boyfriend and Bestie Announced Their Wedding Chapter 09

## [Elena’s POV]

I had no clue what he was talking about.

Nathan looked out the window and let out a heavy sigh.

“Elena, you’ve always said I was dense. Whenever the teacher explained something, I’d make you go over it with me again and again.”

I frowned at him. “What are you trying to say?”

He slowly turned back to me, his eyes red.

“Elena, Vivian lied to me.”

I dropped my spoon. It clinked against the cup.

Nathan lowered his head and clasped his hands so tightly that he looked consumed by self-hatred.

He told me everything.

Months earlier, Vivian had gone to him and said I’d been diagnosed with lupus and needed a kidney transplant.

He had wanted to come to me, but she stopped him.

She played him a recording.

Nathan pulled out his phone and played it.

It was my voice, but I had never said those words. If you listened closely, you could tell it was Al-generated.

[Vivi, I’ve been diagnosed with severe lupus, and my kidneys are failing. I need a transplant.]

[Don’t tell Nathan. I don’t want him to worry.]

[If he finds out, I’ll leave him. I can’t drag him into this.]

I sat there in silence for a long time.

I didn’t know what to feel or how to react.

Nathan looked up, drowning in regret.

“Elena, I was terrified you’d leave me. I was afraid that one day you would…”

“So when Vivian made her demand, I agreed, even though I’d only just promised to marry you. Elena, I’m sorry.”

“What did Vivian demand?” I asked.

Nathan wiped his eyes.

“She showed me medical records saying she was terminally ill and offered to donate one of her kidneys to you before she died.”

“Her only condition was that I marry her before she died.”

“So you said yes?”

I let out a bitter laugh.

“Yes.”

Nathan gave a strained smile.

“The recording said you’d leave me if I found out, so I had to pretend I knew nothing. That’s why I suddenly married Vivian.”

“That’s why I panicked when Vivian fell. I was afraid something would happen to her and she wouldn’t be healthy enough to donate.”

“That’s why… that’s why I…”

He broke down sobbing.

Pieces of the past began to fall into place.

I remembered the day at Eldridge General Hospital when he asked whether I was feeling sick again.

At Mom’s funeral, he’d almost blurted out that I was sick, but Vivian cut him off.

But it was ridiculous.

All of it had happened because of a single recording from an unknown source.

I lost everything.

But…
