[Elena’s POV]

My head snapped up, and I stared at her in disbelief.

“You knew?”

Growing up, Vivian had always teased me and often made me cry, but she’d also been good to me. She was my only real friend.

In middle school, when a boy stuck gum in my hair, she beat him until his nose bled.

Pat came to school and hit her for it, but Vivian only tilted her head and grinned at me.

The next day, Nathan caught the boy asleep after school and smeared gum all over his hair.

After school, Nathan and Vivian bickered and horsed around behind me, neither willing to back down until I said which of them mattered more to me.

Those sunsets bore witness to the bond the three of us shared.

I never imagined they would one day get married, or that Vivian would tell me she’d known about Nathan and me all along.

My fingers went cold, and I trembled so badly I could barely speak.

“Then… you two…”

Vivian suddenly smiled.

“Elena, I’ve always let you have your way. I’ve protected you our whole lives.”

“Just this once, let me have Nathan. Okay?”

“What…?”

Before I could process her words, she suddenly threw herself to the floor and knocked over the trash can with one hand.

I instinctively reached out to help her, but Nathan burst in and shoved me to the floor.

My head struck the corner of the bookcase, and I gasped in pain.

He crouched protectively around Vivian, panic filling his eyes.

“Vivi, what happened?”

When he looked up at me, every trace of warmth was gone, replaced by cold accusation.

“Why did you push her?!”

I touched the back of my head. My fingers came back red.

Nathan froze, and guilt flashed across his face.

“I’m sorry. I panicked. Are you okay?”

Vivian let Nathan help her up and gently shook her head.

“I lost my balance. Elena didn’t do anything.”

From downstairs, Pat called up, asking them to decide on the wedding venue.

I said nothing. I pushed myself up off the floor.

Nathan let Vivian pull him away, but at the door, he glanced back at me with that same complicated look.

That night, he texted me.

[Elena, I was wrong earlier. Are you hurt?]

I didn’t reply.

The next day, I went to Eldridge General Hospital and unexpectedly ran into him.

He came over, concern in his voice.

“Why are you at the hospital? Are you feeling sick again?”

I ignored him and walked toward the elevator.

He stepped right in my way.

“Elena, will you please listen to me? I can explain…”

“Nathan?”

Vivian’s voice cut in from behind.

“What are you two doing?”

She looked at me, her eyes rimmed red.

“Elena, I know you’ve always liked Nathan, but we’re getting married in three days. Do you have to keep clinging to him now, of all times?”

“We’re best friends. How could you do this to me?”

Passersby began to stop and stare.

“Her best friend is stealing her fiancé?”

“She’s still chasing a man who’s getting married in three days? Seriously?”

“Imagine being that desperate for a man. What’s wrong with girls these days?”

The whispers were quiet, but every word stabbed into me.

“I didn’t!”

I shot Nathan a desperate look, silently begging him to say something, anything at all.

But he took two steps back and stood beside Vivian, opposite me, looking at me like a stranger.

Five years ago, when he confessed to me, his eyes were full of love.

He promised he’d never let anyone hurt me.

I bit my lip hard and choked back the tears.

I turned to leave, but Vivian snatched the pregnancy report from my hand.

“You’re pregnant!”

She shouted as if she wanted everyone in the hospital to hear.

“Whose baby is it? Could it be… Nathan’s?”

Her voice broke. Tears started streaming down her face.

Nathan’s head snapped toward me, shock filling his eyes.

But Vivian’s sobs pulled him back. He pulled her into his arms like she was something precious.

“That’s impossible. I’ve never touched her. I have no idea who the father is.”

I froze. My whole body went cold.
