I Planned to Announce My Pregnancy, Boyfriend and Bestie Announced Their Wedding Chapter 01

[Elena Reyes’s POV]

I clutched the pregnancy confirmation from my OB-GYN as I headed home to surprise Mom.

During dinner, she suddenly asked me a question.

“Do you remember coming to my office when you were little? Eleanor Hayes’s son, Nathaniel Hayes, was always there to play with you.”

I smiled and nodded.

Mom continued.

“And do you remember our neighbor Patricia Chandler’s daughter, Vivian? She was such a tomboy, always smearing mud on your face, and Nathan would always get even with her for you.”

My ears burned as I started to place the pregnancy confirmation on the table, but Mom spoke softly before I could.

“Nathan is marrying her this Wednesday.”

My hand froze as a sound came from behind me.

Pat walked in, followed by Nathan and Vivian Chandler.

She had come to ask Mom for advice about the wedding.

I pulled out my phone. Nathan’s latest message was from the day before.

[Wait for me. I promise I’ll come marry you.]

When I looked up again, Nathan and Vivian were standing close together, looking intimate. My vision blurred.

Nathan, you lied.

“Elena? Are you feeling okay?”

Pat glanced at me.

“Are you sad because our Vivi is getting married? No wonder. You two are best friends, after all.”

My lips twitched as I lowered my head, and a tear fell onto the pregnancy confirmation hidden beneath the table.

“Yeah.”

I lifted my gaze to Nathan.

“I can’t bear to let go.”

His hands clenched instinctively, and an unreadable emotion crossed his eyes.

Vivian tightened her hold on his arm.

“Elena, don’t worry. The three of us grew up together. Even after Nathan and I get married, we’ll never neglect you.”

I crumpled the paper in my fist as pain ripped through my heart.

I couldn’t stay another second. I turned and fled to my room.

Tears poured down my face, but I didn’t dare make a sound. How was I supposed to say any of it?

That Nathan had been the man I’d loved for five years? That I was carrying his child? That he’d promised to marry me?

I slid to the floor, wrapped my arms around my knees, and buried my face against them as I sobbed.

My phone buzzed with a text from Nathan.

[I can explain everything. Just don’t make a scene right now. It’ll only make things harder for Vivi.]

The phone clattered to the floor, and the tears tasted bitter on my lips.

I stood and threw the pregnancy confirmation into the trash.

I was only two months pregnant.

I’d wanted to tell Nathan that he was going to be a father.

But there was no point now.

I opened my desk drawer. Inside was an unsigned international assignment agreement from a multinational company.

It had arrived a week earlier, but I’d set it aside because Nathan had said he would marry me.

Now I only wanted to leave and get as far away from them as possible.

I signed my name without a second thought.

I’d just put the agreement away when the door behind me opened.

“Elena.”

It was Vivian. She walked over, took my hand with a smile, and said something that chilled me to the bone.

“I know you’ve been dating Nathan.”
