After that, Cole and I saw Grant twice more.

Each time, Grant looked no different from before.

Until one dinner.

Halfway through dinner, I stepped out to take a call.

They’d all been drinking.

Sophie accidentally let something slip.

“Grant… do you like Claire? You’ve been looking at her differently lately.”

Grant didn’t deny it.

That was how Cole finally found out there had been something between Grant and me.

For the first time, he didn’t treat Grant like the older brother he’d always respected.

He punched him.

Grant took it without hitting back.

When I came in,

I heard Grant say,

“Done? Will you give her back to me now?”

Cole laughed in disbelief.

Then he lunged forward to hit him again.

The others held him back.

I hurried over and pulled Cole away. “Stop. It’s all in the past, okay?”

After a long moment, he nodded. “Okay. If that’s what you want.

I grabbed my bag and started to leave with Cole.

But at the door,

Grant’s voice came from behind me.

“Claire. I met you first.”

I stopped.

“Too late.”

Two days later, Cole’s family called him back to New York.

Something important had come up.

After Cole left,

Grant started appearing around me more and more.

He sent gifts too. Expensive ones.

I refused every one and sent them straight back.

When Cole found out, he practically ground his teeth. “I knew it. He’s behind this.”

“I’m coming down tonight.”

I reassured him, “I’m fine. I can handle it. If you trust me, stay there and take care of what you need

to.”

I hadn’t expected Vivian to find out too.

She came to my apartment.

The moment I opened the door, she shoved me.

I hit the floor and scraped my palm.

She was sobbing.

“He left me because of you, didn’t he?”

I tried to explain.

“I didn’t know he was your boyfriend. And I don’t like him anymore.”

But Vivian wouldn’t listen. She just kept crying.

Eventually, Grant showed up.

He took Vivian away.

Before he left, he said without turning around, “I’m sorry.”

I answered,

“If you mean that, then stay out of my life from now on.”

That night, my new roommate stood at the window and pointed to the luxury car downstairs.

“Isn’t that Mr. Whitmore’s car?”

I walked over and looked.

“Yeah. It is.”

“He’s been down there a while.”

I sighed and sent Grant a message.

[Go home. I’m deleting your number.]

He answered almost immediately.

[Do we really have to do this?]

I wrote back, [Yes.]

He didn’t reply again.
