I Got A Thanks You Card While She Got His Pink Diamond Chapter 06

I turned my phone back on while I was on my way to the cemetery.

The moment the screen lit up, messages began flooding in one after another.

Some were from Ethan, some from Noah, and some from Ethan’s mother.

I didn’t open any of them.

The driver glanced at me in the rearview mirror.

“Getting married today, miss?”

I lowered my eyes to the veil in my hands.

It was the one the bridal consultant had run after me to return the day before.

I had meant to throw it away, but in the end, I brought it with me.

I had chosen that veil myself.

Once, I had truly wanted to marry Ethan.

I had even rewritten my wedding vows over and over without telling him, planning to say “I do” softly because I was afraid I would start crying.

By the time the car stopped outside the cemetery, it had begun to rain again.

I didn’t have an umbrella.

I hadn’t had one on the night I turned eighteen, and I didn’t have one today.

This time, though, I didn’t stand still and wait for anyone to turn back for me.

Holding the veil against my chest, I climbed the steps one at a time.

The rain had washed my mother’s headstone clean.

She was still young in the photograph, her eyes as gentle as I remembered from all the times she had stroked my hair.

I crouched down and spread the veil in front of her grave.

“Mom, I’m sorry.”

My voice broke the moment I spoke.

“I couldn’t keep the earrings safe.”

“And there isn’t going to be a wedding.”

Rain ran down my face, and I couldn’t tell where it ended and my tears began.

“But Mom, I can’t do this anymore.”

“I thought if I could just make it through today, I would finally have a family.”

“But they let someone else wear your earrings. They turned my wedding into a celebration of the three of us, then called me unreasonable for being hurt.”

I rested my forehead against the cold headstone.

“Mom, I’m not marrying him.”

“Please don’t blame me.”

My phone vibrated again.

This time, it was Ethan.

I stared at the screen for a long time before answering.

It was noisy on his end, as if the wedding venue had descended into chaos.

Ethan’s voice, however, was low and trembling.

“Leah, where are you?”

I didn’t answer, and panic immediately entered his voice.

“I called off the wedding. I had the photos taken down, and I’m looking for the earrings. Come back,

and we’ll start over.”

I closed my eyes.

“Ethan.”

“I’m here,” he answered immediately.

“It rained this hard the day my mother died too.”

The other end of the line went silent.

“I called you seventeen times.”

“Later, you wired me five thousand dollars with ‘My condolences’ in the memo line.”

Ethan’s breathing turned uneven.

I continued.

“I stood outside the funeral home that day and waited for you until it got dark.”

“Noah came once, but then Sienna called him, and he left.”

“He said the dead were already gone, and the living mattered more.”

Something shattered on the other end of the call.

I gave a quiet laugh.

“See? I remember all of it.”

“I just wanted a family so badly that I pretended I had forgotten.”

Ethan’s voice was completely hoarse.

“Leah, I’m sorry.”

I looked at my mother’s photograph on the headstone.

“Stop apologizing.”

“It’s far too late for apologies from any of you.”

I ended the call, removed the SIM card from my phone, and snapped it in half.

Then I carefully folded the veil and left it in front of my mother’s grave.

“Mom, I’m leaving.”

“From now on, I’ll hold my own umbrella.”
